I have a small clump of golden bamboo growing on one side of our property. This year the roots are invading our berry patch. I ordered 75” of “bamboo shield”.
this is a 30” wide, 80 mil plastic root barrier:

Here are the invading roots:

We dug a 50’ trench about 24” deep and installed the 30” barrier on the angle so future roots come to the surface. My son helped me plant the barrier on Father’s day! He is off to grad school so I really appreciate him being home. :)

I’m working on my backhoe dolly and the backhoe hydraulic cylinders have sprung a few new leaks. I need help finding seal kits as well. :(

We don’t have any bamboo on our place. We do have a literal pit that encompasses about 2 acres which is full of kudzu. Due to its rather extreme topography it’s not really usable for anything else.

Based on representations I have heard here and elsewhere regarding the aggressively invasive nature of bamboo, I have considered, as a long term retirement project, planting a bit of bamboo here and there in the pit. Then sell subscriptions on Patreon to the ensuing video series, “Death Match In The Pit, Bamboo v Kudzu”.

My money would be on kudzu, but I’m not highly confident…

What a project just to stop a plant from invading the area. According to the literature, the warmer the climate the deeper the barrier needs to be. Think I'd put some copper sulfate in the trench on the garden side!!

Likely one of the worst "landscaping" jobs that I ever did was to dig out a patch of Bamboo with my old BX23. That was back in about 2006 and I'll never forget that nightmare.

There was one last rhizome shoot coming up by the guys garage (approx 10-15 yards from the main bamboo "forest"). Client asked how to get rid of it...I suggested that he simply spill some gasoline there.

I'm assuming you mean Japanese Knotweed, which is not bamboo. That stuff is extremely evasive. Taken me almost 5 years to totally rid from my property.

Nope. It was bamboo.

Wow, I didn't know actual bamboo was a real issue!
Yes, it is.

There are now many town ordnances (here) against planting it without a significant rhizome barrier... Severe fines for doing so. Some towns forbid it wholly (barrier or not).

Once established, you pretty much need napalm to control it.

There are over 1000 species of bamboo but can be broken into 2 types: Clumping and running. Sounds like you have the running type. Clumping can be controlled more easily although it does spread, just not as agressively. You really don't want the running type.

Napalm would work for the stocks but if you dont kill the roots,, all you did was burn off the top and give the roots more sun.

You need straight gasoline for the roots.
