Mine's full of pea gravel. That allows any rain/snow to filter down and drain out. Sand might either leak out of the drain holes, or clog them.

Depends what you're looking for, quality or just-good-enough. Titan brand is decent, but not top of the line. For occasional use, probably just fine.

Fill with steel scrap if you want most weight per CF.

I think the folks that use sand are buying the bags of sand sold at Big box hardware stores. From what I have read they leave the sand in the bags so they can unload the box and re-use the sand. I use 6/7 gravel in mine.

has anyone tried filling it with sand and how does it work
I use sand in mine…it works fine. I think the key thing is what’s the correct amount and get a box correct size for your uses. I use playground sand in bags for about two thirds of the volume and then loose sand to fill in all the gaps and the top third…I take out of top third and spread on driveway if it’s icey and need grit…so for me it serves a dual purpose. I keep a removeable box lid / tool box of sorts on top of mine which would also keep the rain/snow out of sand.
