Well second day of Dangerous Air Quality, it's bad... Real bad.
This is smoke from 3 different states (Oregon, Washington, and Montana) and Canada, none of it from anything local.
I don't have any breathing issues and this is giving me a headache and making it hard to breath.

No sunglasses needed!

You normally would be seeing a big mountain over these trees, and it's only about a mile away.
Visibility varies from about 1/4 mile to less.

Shaun, I think your surrounded  There's at least 2 more fires south of you around Salt Lake City. Been surprised at how hot and dry that area of the country has been.

Hope your air quality improves and they can get a handle on the fires.

It must be really bad, the smoke shield reaches all the way to Michigan. Hope they can get them out soon.

The West is definitely burning, we could not see our mountain this weekend, better today. 100,000 acre, not a mistake comma is in the right place, fire north of us on the Wyoming Montana border, caused by lightning.
Friends and relatives bracing for hurricane in Florida so I guess every place has issues and challenges.

Too bad we can't send some of the moisture from the East Coast to the West Coast. We have had a cool wet summer and are presently getting more rain that I would gladly share if I could.

Equality is not what Mother Nature expresses when it comes to weather. Everything is "too", except for those perfect days that are few and far between. That is when we sit on the deck and look at the mountain and see the deer and the antelope play and think we are in the best place in the world. Then the blizzard hits or the wind blows.
By the way do you know what they call 100 mph winds in Wyoming?
Answer: Tuesday
At least in the south they name them and I see now that the weather people are naming snow storms/blizzards so we don't feel as left out.

Wow, that's terrible. Been relatively quiet around here, wildfire wise, Thank God.
The air at the cabin has been that bad only twice since 1977; both were wild fires, one burning 4 miles away & one 7 miles away. Scary. Hope the fires stay distant & you get some rain on them.

Being september it cant last much longer.

A few years back i was in northern manitoba working the fires,it go so bad you could barely make out the road.
A helicopter pilot lost his bearings and piled into a shoreline on a small lake. Was not a good scene,no aircraft searches only way was on foot.
Back in the 80's there was a fire not more than 60 miles from here, fire of 83 took 40 thousand acres.

13 years ago one was less than a mile from me. High winds and it was bad.
Water bombers managed to contain it. Was close to river so it was a quick turnaround.

Dad would tell us when he was a kid and they would trek in the the GWN to fish, that when fire season rolled around, if a fire was burning, it didnt matter where you were from, US or Canada, you helped fight the fire or you went to jail. He fought some fires, and lost a couple of jobs because he coulnt get back home to go to work after vacation. Thats not something I would ever want to go through. I dont know which would be worse, a big fire, or a big hurricane

Yup, sitting in the bar across the street fron the forestry office could get you fighting fire. I was on many fires in my youth, put my name in at the office and was called as needed. Also was on the volunteer town fire department.
Would rather put out forest fires.

Sean,
Pretty nasty here just a bump or two over from you. Checked the air quality and we were black, as bad or worse than Beijing!

Also so dry here I am afraid to brush hog or run the chain saw. Any spark and I would contribute to the air quality. Might get a little lightning come friday which we do not need!

That's the way we were last summer. This summer we are getting pounded by one thunder storm after another. Tuesday night lighting struck a Hemlock tree about 300 yards down the road from and blew it to bits. 1/2 mile down the hill it knocked a tree onto the power line taking out the power and set the tree on fire. Last year that would have caused a major fire but everything is so saturated this year there was no danger.
