I've been thinking about a backyard pond/water feature for quite some time

I've got 2 rock formations that have been here, probably since Jesus walked the Earth

It has been my fire pit for quite a few years

But all the kids grew up and doesn't get much use

Anyway, I started digging today

I will add pictures as a progress

Depending on how involved you want to get and how big this is going to be, look into putting a drain below the liner. If you ever have to drain the pond (or it drains on its own) during wet/breakup season, water can fill up the hole and push the liner up. This may not be a concern for your area, but worth considering at this stage (or buying an hour of a pond guy's time for advice).

No liner.

Looks like a very nice starting point for a water feature/small pond.

May consider gradual slope due to drown hazard for little ones, and with no liner the sides will cave in.

Just the beginning stage ...

nobody besides frogs and birds are swimming here.

Not worried about the sides caving.

Well,
I dug out quite a bit...

close to 6' in the deep end close to the big rocks.

Covered everything with Stone Sand...
some carpeting as underlayment....
Blue tarp.

Heavy duty Billboard tarp.

45 Mil rubber liner.

a little overkill... but certain no rocks will come close to the liner...

still in the process of banking up the sides.... then laying flat rock / border...

waterfall will be between the rocks....

need to decide on a pump/filter for circulation....

anyway heres a few pics. so far.

thanks for all suggestions so far.

glad I went with the liner.

Dogs are gonna love it.
I had a sit down with them last night over dinner... explaining the rules...
NO DOGS in the pond.

I'm not sure they understood.... a lot of head tilting...

I'm putting a fence around it today... just in case.

Not much time to work on the pond lately...
But I did manage to lay some flat rock and some native crushed stone...

I grabbed some lillypads from another local pond and they seem to be surviving.

We had some visitors today.... I think the word is getting around in frogtown..

Just don’t let any miserable little germ factories close to the pond. Dogs are OK. I had several little kids throwing rocks in my pond at my fish and ended up puncturing the liners. The same day they punctured my liner they also busted up my $2500 drone sitting on a shelf in my bedroom. They spilled juice on the couch and carpet in my loft. They took my wife’s shell collection from all over the world, broke them, and threw them in the fish pond at the fish. They caused damage and destruction all over my house and property. I’m not sure who I hate worse, the little kids, or their pathetic excuse for parents. In the future, I told my wife nobody with kids is invited to our house ever again.

Yes, anytime there are kids. They are throwing rocks in the pond, have to watch them close.

We had a break in several years ago. The burglars didn’t cause as much damage as your guests’ children.

No kids over here.

Years ago my wife & I made a conscious decision to NOT bring any kids into this world.

I'm very happy about that decision ..... seeing the state of the world today.

I'm perfectly content with dogs.... and a few frogs...

Color me really confused??????
Your very first post, you said the kids all grew up?
You even have a picture of (you?) and kids around the fire pit.
