It's usually the drive is bad.
fist with the cable off the dash and on the drive on the motor, start it and see if it spins.
If it does then it's a tach issue.
And fixing that is not cheap or easy.
If the cable doesn't spin.
Pull the four bolts and pull the drive to verify its stripped..

i did the same thing cable was good one piece and thought nothing to loose sprayed PB blaster in tach and works fine ...
