Hi everyone and thanks for you help.
I have an older model B8200HST. It is a 4wd unit and it began showind the no charge idiot light last fall. I recently checked the voltage before and after the engine was running to find the remained around 12.4 volts.. How do I determine if it is the dynamo or the regulator? Where is that regulator and how do I get to it? I have looked an am afraid it is under the dash somewhere...

Thanks again

Take the alternator (dynamo) to NAPA. They can test it for you on their test stand. OR, find someone with a WSM for that tractor and follow the test procedure.

Oh heck! You're in Granville, about 20 miles away! If your NAPA doesn't have a test stand the one here in Mount Vernon does, the Utica store at US 62 on 661 might have one. I've got a WSM for a 85 vintage M4500 but I don't know if the test procedure is the same for your B alternator and/or regulator. That's probably a question for SD Vic. Facklers might help you out, their SD folks at the MV store are pretty nice.

KubBRC,

Had the same problem with my B8200. Replaced the Voltage Regulator and fixed the problem right up. Part numbers have changed a bit though. Original 15533-64600, now after several changes I think the current is PN201-68562. I got mine off eBay a couple years back. It is located behind the dash, held on by the two screws to the left of the ignition switch with nuts on the back side. "Sucks" Wil need to loosen tank straps and tank to get at it. Can't remember if I had to take valve cover loose or not. Might be able to take dash loose too, didn't try that, might be easier. Here is the WSM page for testing the Dynamo and Regulator.

Thanks Kubota Newbie, but I plan to try Phidac's suggestions first. If they do not help, I will take it off and have it checked.

Phidac,

I checked out my dynamo and it is charging. After removing the tank and loosening the dash, I found the regulator/rectifier but mine is a RS 5101 and does not have the wiring to the plug as you show. I have the six wires but on one side there is a blue black blue and on the other a green yellow and red. I check the ohms across the 2 blues and it is open.. Does that mean it is bad or am I checking the wrong wires since this one is different??

Thanks for any help. I see there are a couple of regulators on Ebay but do not want to buy one if not needed..

KubBRC,

Glad to hear the Dynamo is OK. If you are not getting continuity on the two Blue or (Grey) wires, then the regulator is bad. It should make a complete circuit when you test for ohms/continuity. The meter should read 0 or somewhere near that. If it reads 1 it is open like you said and bad.

I did see one on eBay with your part number. Yours might not be the original as well. I think my replacement had the blue instead of grey too.

It is a widely used regulator on many different applications so there are many part numbers that are basically the same thing.

Here are some numbers that are the same.

Phildac,
Thanks so much for all the information. I have a local dealer nearby and will check with him on the regulator first. I like to help our local folks first, but if it is just too much above ebay, then that's where I be headed.

Thanks again for your quick response..

Phildac,
Thanks for all your help. I bought a regulator from Ebay and that took care of the problem. The charging light went out and the voltage was 13.5 and climbing. I did not run it long as since I removed the gas tank there was not much fuel in it.
The thing is though, I checked the blue wires of the new regulator as soon as I opened the box and they were open also... I did see that when I checked only one blue with the red and green and others, one wire had readings across 3 other wires. The other blue wire only read 25 or so on the black wire.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the help.
