B8200HST-D steering box, replacement, compatability with other models?

I bought last winter a B8200HST-D tractor and this winter have lost the steering in it. My guess is that the bearing on the bottom got a little bit of water in it, flew apart and ruined the worm gear and the shaft. There were bearings everywhere, and surface rust mid way down the shaft once I got inside to peak at everything. I have searched exhaustively looking for the ball nut assembly, lower bearing, and all the seals and plugs that go along the top of the column tube. The steering sector looks good. Anybody know if parts from the series above or below the B8200 will work? From my perspective, if the bolts will line up on the base, the steering shaft angle and length are close, I'm in. Sorry I can't help you. I just worked on a B6200 steering box that was the same as the B7200. I looked up the B8200 steering box and it looks a lot beefier than the one I worked on. If you haven't seen it yet, here is a place to down load the parts manual for your tractor:

I was waiting for someone with more info to help. I found a thread that shows a member replacing a B7200 steering box with one from a L175. These are available new on ebay. I'm sure you could do the same.

I can't believe the parts are not available for your B8200. Maybe Vic will chime in. I bet he has the parts or knows what will fit from another tractor.

Here is an update from my troubles. I received this email form Kubota today:

Hi, Mr. Taylor,

Thank you for contacting Kubota Parts. I am sorry to tell you that the
dealer is correct. We cannot get the steering parts for that model from
Japan any more. I searched the database for the ball nut assy, which is the
piece you're looking for, as well as the complete assembly with no luck. I
do apologize for this. Every effort is made to stock parts for as long as
possible on all models, however, on some of the older ones we do run into
this occasionally.

I will attach a listing of salvage yards which deal in Kubota Parts in a
separate email in hopes that you might find the part in one of those.

Again, my sincere apology for this inconvenience.

Sorry to hear that. The steering shaft and nut for the B6200 and B7200 just became available on the after market in the last year or so. The reason I got my B6200 is because it had sat at a repair shop for two years and they could not get the parts for the steering. Recently I noticed two Kubotas behind a dealers shop with the top of the engines open. I ask the status of the tractors (I am always looking for a deal) and was told they couldn't get the parts and the tractors had been sitting there for over a year. I wish I could remember the model numbers. It makes it scary to buy 20-30 year old tractors when there is a chance you won't find parts.

I wish you luck in your search. If I come upon a B8200 parts tractor, I will certainly let you know.

I've not had any luck with original parts, I'm looking into the power steering option, and wishing there were a close to bolt on solution for less than $1000. I've made dozens of emails and phone calls, looks like there are a lot of people with B8200's in the same boat. . .

A couple of thoughts come to mind:

1. - Yanmar used many of the same steering parts as Kubota. With some thorough digging you might find something from Yanmar that will work.

2. - Might be worth looking harder at one of the aftermarket units that are available. Adapting to fit the B8200 might not be that tough. If your housing is good and the assy uses the same ballnut, it might be as simple as cutting and welding the shaft on the new one to the proper length.

3. - The aftermarket units are being made in the US. Might be worth contacting the manufacturer to see if they are working on one for the B8200.

I bet Apogee is correct that some other tractor might use the same part. Just how do you find out what will fit? It is not like you can line them up and compare.

I'd like to know more about aftermarket units. Are these aftermarket manual steering parts? Post me a link if you can, I have found nothing!! I will be looking into the Yanmar possibility, maybe I can find parts diagrams that look similar, I'll let you know.

I have messaged back and forth with Vic, I haven't heard anything from him in a couple of days, we did seem to be misunderstanding each other in reference to parts and parts numbers. No joy yet. I'll keep looking, THANKS GUYS!!

Listed on the page below is info that should give you an idea of what is available. You will have to measure your parts to see if any of the dimensions are close.

Also, you might contact the vendor and see if they will share who the manufacturer is so you can contact them directly.

I'd also browse the other brands of tractors on their pages to see if any of the others appear close. Could be that the dots just haven't been connected by the aftermarket mfg to figure out that they will also fit a B8200...(I doubt it, but one never knows) Certainly worth digging into further and asking questions...

Finally, it's also worth searching ebay because the aftermarket parts seem to be listed there by various suppliers. By scanning the pages, one can formulate a pretty good idea of whether or not something might work or if there are parts available that the vendor I listed doesn't yet carry. It's also a good source of pics so you can see what the replacement actually looks like.

My steering shaft is a two piece design, and it measures 19.5". There is one listed at 18 and 5/8ths, but no other measurements on shaft diameter or the like. I may have to give them a call when they open tomorrow. Again, thanks for all your help on this guys, I'm sure we'll find a solution sooner or later, whether it's big money power steering or retro-engineering a replacement!! THANKS AGAIN!!

I just was looking on weavers compact tractor and they had a sector shaft for a b8200

I'm meeting with a guy who has run his own machine shop for 36 years on Monday to see if there is any way he can reconstruct the parts that have damage done to them. Mainly we are talking about the steering shaft and the worm gear/ball nut on the bottom. All the other parts of the gear box seem to be in stock and available through the dealer. I spoke with some folks at Hoye Tractor parts today, and they told me it would be a shot in the dark to find anything line up from Yanmar to Kubota, and that they have a 10% restocking fee and that you must pay return shipping should you not want the part. They talked about Kubota guys being unsatisfied in the past. I will take some pics to show you all the damage that has been done and the situation I am in, and then wait to see on the machinist. If this doesn't work out, it looks like you'll get to see the expensive power steering system get installed as I don't have another solution. As always, thanks for your input and help!!

Part number 66310-41200 comes back at Messicks as column comp. and is outlined at Kubota's own k-pad as parts 18 and 19, the metal tube column that surrounds the ball nut shaft assembly (http://kpad2.kubota.co.jp/kpad2/PartsInfo.do?bookCd=100K0092&funcCd=&figNo=T04200&dispType=2) as shown in the link.

I need part # 66301-41300 which is parts 6-14 or the ball nut assembly. I'd even pay for part #66301-41100 which is the steering assembly parts 2-38. Messicks doesn't show any of these in stock, and as I posted earlier, Kubota responded to me directly they are no longer making them. Coleman lists 41300 as discontinued. I'm really not sure how we are getting our parts numbers mixed up, I am looking directly from the kubota tractor corporation website. If you have any other ideas, in any way, websites, phone numbers, any leads, I am all ears. I have even contacted kubota in Germany and used google translator to help with the emails and website. I've called and emailed every salvage yard Kubota gave me. Sincerely frustrated doesn't begin to cover it.

I ordered from Coleman's this morning, everything I need if in fact the 2wd shaft will work, part #67800-41130. I went this way first as I figured least expensive first, and that with any luck the shaft length will be the same 8200 to 8200. There is a lead time on a few of the parts, but as soon as I get everything in, i will photograph and document everything. Vic your information was the exact link I was looking for to try and solve this problem. With any luck, this will work, and help not only me, but the dozens of other folks I've seen working this EXACT same problem. Can't thank you enough, if this works I owe you!! STAY TUNED!!
