Yes that is an easy way to test the pressure.

Air in the hydraulics is purged in about 3 sec on most systems, so not much chance of that being your issue.

I didn't get a chance to put a gauge on the hydraulics but I needed to move the drum off of my patio the other night. I figured I would give it a try one more time. It didn't lift it but when I put the RPM's up a little and pushed the lever to up position I was able to jump off the tractor and help the tractor lift the barrel. I was able to get it all the way up. Dropped it down and it wouldn't go back up. Pushed the lever to up and helped it again and it went up. Is there something in that pump I can clean or something? Just seems like the pump is working just blocked.
