B7500 Lack of power

Hi,

I have a B7500 2002 and I have sometime lack of power problem. Today I just have enough to put it back in the garage.

I bought it last winter and I had exactly the same issue. I have changed fuel filter. It has currently only few hours since I change the filter. During the winter I was thinking it was Diesel issue (water in the fuel). I drained all the fuel and change for new one. It was seeming solving the issue.

Today I was 30 degree Celsius and I had exactly the same issue. The engine is all the time really near to choke and moving accelerator lever change nothing to the power or RPM of the engine. Is someone have idea what is needed to clean or what is wrong?

Sounds like you may have an algae problem in your diesel tank.

Search for solutions since it has been discussed at length and trouble shooting methods presented.

I read a few article about algae in the fuel. Many people report black fuel filter. My fuel filter seems really clean. Is it possible to have algae problem and clean fuel filter?

You could try disconnecting the fuel line at the filter to see if you are getting good flow from the tank. If the fuel flow does not appear to be restricted, it might be a problem with the small lift pump that brings fuel from the filter to the injector pump.

Thank you for your advice. It was one of my idea. The last time I had this issue. I have drained the tank by disconnecting the tube before the filter. At this time I had good flow. I will see if now I have similar situation.

Check the fuel filter base. There is a little valve in there that closes when you remove the filter and then reopens when you put the filter back on. I have seen stuff build up in the back side of the little valve restricting the flow.

Thank you, for this other great advise. It is on my plan to dismantle the fuel filter tonight. I will post feedback.

Yesterday never have time to dismantle the filter but I tried to start the tractor. It was a little bit more difficult to start than normal but after it was running great. It seems the problem solve but for how much time? Someone have new advice base on this new element?

Check the vent on your fuel cap. If the tank can't breath it will restrict the fuel flow.

It takes fuel and air to make power in an IC engine. Low power in a diesel usually means restricted fuel flow or restricted airflow or both.


Clean fuel is a prerequisite for a diesel. One of the biggest fuel problems in condensed water in the fuel tank. You can't see it happening but it does. Water in the fuel is bad in and of itself. The fine clearances in the injector pump can be damaged by allowing water into the pump. Also water in the fuel makes for a weak mixture. To minimize condensation TRY TO KEEP THE TANK FULL!

Next, bacteria (not algae) can live in the fuel/water interface in the bottom of the tank and that can lead to snotty looking stuff that can clog the tank outlet strainer and the downstream fuel delivery system. Once that happens, power will be restricted and may get to the point you won't be able to start. Mechanical damage to the fuel lines can also restrict fuel flow. In your case I'd start by checking the tank outlet strainer. If it's clogged then chances are their is bacterial sludge in the tank and it needs to cleaned with a biocide and repfilled with fresh fuel. Next look for a clogged or pinched fuel line to the filter. Look for a blockage in the filter head. Make sure all the fittings are tight because air can get into the lines and this can cause problems.

Air restriction also limits power. This is usually a simple fix. Check the air filter and blow it out carefully to remove dust, chaff, etc or just replace it.
