Hi
I parked the B7200 up in a shed 15 years ago, yesterday i tried to start it!!!, here is the low down

1. Drained oil and changed oil and filter
2. Drained fuel, changed filter and bled system
3. Drained and filled radiator
4. Changed air filter
5. Pulled glow plugs out and tested (all okay)
6. Fitted new battery

So,
She turns over, fuel is getting to the injectors ok fully bled and glows working. There is a small amount of smoke from exhaust, engine turns over freely but no sign at all of it starting.

I dont have a compression tester but all i can think of that could be stopping her firing up is low compression. Can anyone help please am i missing something obvious ??

Thanks

Before I did any thing too dramatic, I would bleed the fuel system again. by opening the nut at the injectors. Don't overheat the starter or wear the battery too far down. Just make sure you have clean fuel with no air, and she'll be going again!!

Why did you park it for 15 years? Is it a collectors tractor?:D

Does this engine have a decompressor lever? If so, use it to crank and bleed, and then use it to get engine up to full speed cranking with starter and close lever while continuing to crank. 15 years is a long time and rings could be stuck, but you may be lucky.

Thanks i took the oil filler cap off while turning engine for quick look inside and tappets/valves seem to be going up and down am i right to think this means pistons moving ok ?

Woukd the engine still turn iver with stuck rings ?

Excuse my ignorance.

Tganks. Hope you are right i will try again, the engine turning over seeems to ,
"Easy" if you know what i mean no labouring or any sign of a fire up. Used to use it for work but stopped doing landscaping, want to fit a backhoe now for some trenching i need to do

on the left lower side is the red compression release knob....

if your not getting any compression .. its possible that its in the open position.. chase the cable out & see.

if your getting fuel... & the glows are hot.. no reason it wont start.

Yes, still turn over, including pistons, stuck rings means stuck/siezed in the ring groove which stops them from expanding and making proper contact with the cylinder walls to create compression.

I should have mentioned this was stuck open but I forced it closed by pushing the lever to closed position on the engine, it's not freed up but is in the closed position. Didn't seem to make any difference to way engine sounds while turning over/spinning.... very easy turnover, too easy! A fast spin with no attempt to start and very little smoke

Your decompression may not be closed, and the engine will not start with it open, but it will turn over much faster when it is open.

I am with D2Cat - you have not closed the decomp yet.
Grease the hell out of the pivot point, remove the cable if still present, and work it back and forth till it closes. And then try again - ought to spin a little slower and then ......fire UP!:)

Thanks 85Hokie and D2Cat I had assumed by forcing the lever shut on the engine that would provide compression. Will try and let you know

To clarify what D2 and Hokie are saying
Follow the decompression cable along to the engine
The outer sheath will stop in a bracket, the inner cable will attach to a lever (I think).
That lever is probably rusted up and holding it in the decompression mode.
Figure out which way to get it to move, soak the pivot point in rust penetrate (not WD-40 splurge on PB Blaster or similar) and GENTLY try to get it loose

Hi, I found the lever it was tight and open, the cable did nothing. I did push the lever though with a screw driver , there was no difference to how the engine sounded ?

Hi said:
Ok - did you work it back and forth, open, close - continue like 50 times? If everything is back to normal - it should slam shut by itself. Until it fully closes (if this is the problem) it will never start.

^^^^ Hokie is telling you same thing i was trying to get to you...

you gotta work that thing manually a bunch to get it to come loose & THEN it will close in the motor.

just forcing it from the outside wont actually make it close.

Spot on guys thanks, it's free now and I have compression. It's still not firing, there is fuel to the injectors and the glow plugs are working so I'm hoping an over night battery charge will give the power needed to fire her up in the morning

BIG BIG THANK YOU to everybody that contributed.. the old girl just fired up and is purring like a kitten after 15 years stuck at he back of a shed***128512; Brilliant advice all round saved me taking the head off which I was just about to do. Stuck decompression lever ***128077;***128077;***128077; I'm sure there will be a few more Tests along the way but for now Happy Man .
