I am attempting to adjust the valves on my B7100 and am wondering how folks typically manually rotate the engine to get to TDC? I have read numerous threads about the adjustment procedure and am familiar with the process however nothing is stated about how to manually rotate the engine to ensure you are at TDC on the correct stroke.

I don't ever worry about TDC when adjusting the valves. Just watch the valve and when it passes the highest point on the cam watch it go back down till it flattens out on the cam and a little past. Your not tuning a 14000 RPM race car close will do!
I adjust mine by running the engine and setting them that way, but I've got a good ear for it.
If you want to make it really easy to turn the motor by hand pull either the injectors or the glow plugs out and then you will be able to turn it without any wrenches. if you don't want to do that either bump the starter or manually turning the fan on some works.

My B7100 has a B219 FEL, which has a hydraulic pump driven by the pulley end of the crank, and the coupler that connects them looks like a couple rows of motorcycle chain side by side. To adjust my valves, I used the wrench pictured below to grab that coupler & rotate the engine… worked great.

There is a nut on the crank pulley/balancer........use a socket and ratchet to turn the crank.

or


Use a strap wrench around the crank pulley.

Thanks, I have a new set of glow plugs on the way so I guess I will kill two birds with one stone.

Remember to take the compression of the engine and make things easier!!
I think what is meant here is to just pull out on the decompression knob that is generally used for cold weather starting. I see no need to remove anything to make it easier to spin the engine when a system is already there which does the same thing. I understand that this tractor has this system as does mine but could be wrong. I did a B7100 search and what I found seems to indicate that it does have a decompression knob.

Only about 1/2 of the B7100 models came with compression release. The newer models don't have it.
But, here is the important part, even if it does have compression release when you remove the valve cover to adjust the valves TADA you also remove the decompression ability as it is installed in the valve cover and works with the valves that your adjusting!

Removing cylinder compression does make the job easier, Hence why I told him to pull the injectors or glow plugs.

That is interesting! Quite frankly even with the cold weather we have in the winter I have never had to use it. Tractor seem to always start with just the pre-heat.

Thanks for the replies, I pulled the glow plugs and had to snug the belt a little so that I could turn it from the top, getting access to the crank/harmonic balancer is really difficult with the way the engine is situated.
