B7100 hst intermittent knocking and puffs smoke

Today while I was hooking up a trailer to test out my freshly made 3 point hitch my b7100 started to knock, lasted about 10 seconds and stopped when I throttled it down to low idle.

This also happened about 3 weeks ago, I was mowing and stopped to take a drink and it did it for about 3 seconds and I shut it down.. started it back up and it hasn't done it since..

Today however it started doing it, then stopped for 30 seconds did it again for 5 seconds till I throttled it down, while knocking was puffing white smoke.. i shut it down again, restarted it and it was fine.. after 2 minutes of running it did it again, throttled it down and it stops.. throttle it up and its fine for 30 seconds to a minute then does it again.. it also seems to lose rpm a bit when this happens

All while having 45 psi.. this is very odd to me... im a diesel mechanic and have no problem rebuilding it, which I imagine its time for being it smoked a bit as is, but not like now when it knocks.

Just seeing if anyone has ever had this happen..

Tomorrow I'm going to pull the valve cover and check the lash, pushrods for anything odd.. and drain the oil and look for metal flakes..

Before all this I noticed the radiator just happened to randomly start leaking too from the bottom of the core..

When it rains it pours I guess..

You said "45 psi" - I take it oil pressure?

I would think an "engine" knock could come and go under load and idle - but disappear and come back seems kinda strange to me.

the puffing white smoke is not a good sign at all...... could you have a clogged injector, that would be too easy I am sure.

Yes 45 psi oil pressure at idle when cold. Yes was thinking injector maybe might get lucky, but still going to pull it apart.. wont really need it for a few months will keep me busy

Could be just water in your fuel. Drain some fuel into a glass jar and let it sit for awhile. Drain the tank if you see any.
Change your fuel filter as well.

Or it could be a head gasket. I'm sure you'll find out soon.

Fuel filter is new, well has about 15 hours tops on it.. but will check.

Good thing is the top gasket kit is cheap including a head gasket.. might as well change all of that because I want to check the pistons for play against the cylinders..

Have the injectors tested, it's very likely they are shot.
While the injectors are out do a compression test.

Tested the injectors.. number 2, the last one looks to have a uneven spray.. others look ok.. I did find rebuilt ones for 42 each with exchange

Drained the oil... absolutely no metal flakes in the oil.. must be that injector

Look at the cost of new OEM, if not too much I would go that way.

Messicks wants 85 each.. I also need to replace the radiator as its leaking.. local shops wants 150 to fix or 220 for a new oem one shipped..

Trying to sell it so being cheap! Already have more into it then what I can sell it for some reason..

I just changed the oil and fired it up.. no more knocking..., for now... I did clean all the injector nozzles, but now the plungers are leaking at the bottom taper.. the lines were stuck on and the plungers turned first.. was a pita to get the injector lines off..

ol mission creep .......... look at one thing - fix it and find 2 more items needing attention!

Better to have dirty injector and a bad radiator - than a total rebuild!

What are you hoping to get for it when selling?

I just listed it on f.b for 1500 as is.. yes better than a rebuild for sure.. should of took the 2k some guy offered me 2 months ago..

Well I fixed it.. had some old faucet rubber o rings that fit perfect.. no more leaks! Ran it for 20 min no more knocking.. and the radiator is not leaking anymore and it got up to 175 degrees at the radiator after 25 min run time.. its 82 today..

Sure would if I could.. it got down to 37 one night a few days ago.. just crazy for south Florida.. with 58 highs.. I enjoyed the 50s.. not so much low 40s..

Hooked up my little trailer, decided to sell it with the tractor so maybe it will be more useful to someone when someone buys it

Put the price back up to 2100.. trailer included.. one guy came to look at it this morning and I showed him everything worked and showed him the leaks.. he ended up saying it was to small for his needs, but he also showed up with no trailer so I knew he was not real serious about buying it.. glad he did not buy it..
