i posted a problem recently where my tractor runs great for about 5-10 minutes then loses power and stops.

i followed the recommendations. i checked the return line and saw no blockages. i looked at the fuel cap; it looks like new.

when this happens, the fuel bowl is always full. it has a new filter with o-rings.

i took the return line off and started the tractor. At first i got no fuel out of the return. a minute later i got about a drip a second. i ran it throttle up and down. No difference. and then, of course, it stopped.

does anyone know if there is a strainer near the fuel injection pump? is any part of the injector pump user serviceable?

odd that it runs so good and then dies.

Thanks for any ideas.

I have never measured the amount of fuel coming back to the tank but it should be more than a drip!

The amount should vary based on demand of the engine rpm. Something does not sound right at the return line. Can you take the return line off at the bypass fitting?

On my F3060 with a 4-cylinder 30 hp engine it's easy to observe the return flow going back just by opening the fuel tank cap and it's pretty decent continuous stream. It has electric lift pump.

I have not had any reason to measure the volume.

Sounds like your engine is starving for fuel!

Your tractor has a mechanical lift pump. There are situations where gravity alone can deliver enough fuel to the engine injection pump but when the tank level drops or you start climbing slopes gravity is not enough and the lift pump is definitely needed.

Often when the lift pump is failing you find diesel fuel getting into the engine oil. Diaphragm #050 is what fails.

Hi all.

I'm the original poster and I was able to fix this tractor and thought i'd share what i found.

The tractor would start and run for a few minutes, then power down, as if it was getting air in the fuel.

i was really frustrated with the problem. Nothing made sense. So I left it alone for quite some time.

One day i thought i'd start all over. fuel tank, lines, filter...hold up! i grabbed the fuel filter bowl and it was loose and i was able to pull it off.

For some reason, the filter bowl had shrunk. i suppose when i first had the problem, it had started to shrink enough to let air infiltration in the fuel system but not enough to be noticeable by inspection.

Never suspected this. But now the little tractor is back in action and i'm sure my neighbors are glad i am mowing down the jungle my field behind their houses had become!
