B7100 hard to turn over

Hi,

My B7100 was not used during most of the summer. Now I would like to prepare it for winter but it is really hard to turn to start.

This is what I checked
- Sanding contact. I took a file and sandpaper to sand each side of ground contact and positive contact (battery and starter)
- Battery : I have charged the battery for the same result. I have connected my truck battery (that good for sure) and I have the same result

Some questions:
Is it possible that it is difficult to turn because one ore more glow plug is dead instead the small wire comes red in the dash?

What other electrical thing can make the engine difficult to turn (or provide not enough of power to turn)

Thank you

Re: B7100 hard to turn

I read the post title at first thinking you had "turning problems" - after reading it muccchhh closer, you have turning OVER problems!;):)

The little glowing light on the dash - IS part of the glow plug system, it takes a bit to get hot enough to see - and IF seen, should be good and plenty hot to start!;):)

Back to the lack of starting - is the starter TURNING OVER the machine with a "normal" speed as you recall in the past or slower? IS it spinning good fashion and not starting? OR is it turning over soooo slow it cannot start?

IF spinning over normally, getting ANY smoke at all?
A bad glow plug will not affect turning over, BUT can seriously affect starting/running.

If you have a good rate of spin, have you check fuel and fuel delivery?

Re: B7100 hard to turn

Thank you for your reply. Yes my glow plug indicator (in the dash ) comes red after 30 to 45 seconds as it was before. My current issue is the engine turn very slow on starter but most of the time just enough to start. It is turning really limit to start. It was turning clearly faster before. Yes it makes smoke when I try to start it.

1st thing to do....
replace the ground cable......
just for S&G's - swap out the cable with a new one or anything else and see if it makes any difference!

It could be your starter - but we aint going there .....yet!:D:)

Re: B7100 hard to turn

Ground cable seems in good shape but it is not really expensive to change it to try. I will probably change both cables I know you do not want to go for the starter now but do you have good way to test it?

What I am hoping for is that a ground cable has frayed UNDER the insulation or near the contact point. Seen if before - ends look fine, but the CONNECTIONS inside the ends are bad or corroded.

If you can - take starter off, have a auto shop test it - but do the cables first;)

When you put the new cables on be sure to clean the metal where the ground wire attaches to the tractor frame, like no paint, metal shines.

You could also have rust/oxidation on the face of the starter where it bolts to the bell housing. That's usually where the starter gets the connection for the ground circuit. If you remove the starter and it test good, be sure to clean those two surfaces.

Re: B7100 hard to turn

Another often forgotten ground is the starter to the engine block. Another forum member found the corrosion between his starter and the engine was limiting the current the starter could receive. He removed the starter and polished up the mating surfaces. Problem solved
.
An alternative is to buy a ground cable with a round eye on each end. Run it from the point where the main ground cable is attached to the frame and the other end to a bolt securing the starter to the engine thus providing a good ground path for the starter.

It is good if this title sounds better for members. I understand that general first thinking is related to contact issue. I will review and improve all contacts and give news

Hi,

I did exactly what it was suggested by members. I have changed battery wires and remove the starter to sand sitting to have a good connection. also I have modified position of the ground fixation on the tractor frame. I have connected the ground directly on one of the starter mounting bolt. After all those changes, it works really well. Thank you for all your advices.

A bad ground is an easy to look past problem!

Glad you have it up and running!;):)
