This tractor has a grease fittings over the each of the two kingpins in the front axles.

But it also has wheel and front differential gear boxes.

The owners manual does NOT mention these grease fittings in the list of fittings to maintenance.

There does not seem to be an opening to the outside where you can tell you have given it enough grease.

Does the extra grease end up in the gear case?

How many shots would you give each one, or is greasing even necessary with the gear oil bath below?

This has puzzled me for 35 years.

In a word, yes. Before I rebuilt my front axle, I could never get (in or out) the volume of gear oil the manual states for the front axle capacities. Once I opened it up, both outer gearcases were about 1/3 full of old grease, sludge, dirt, & old possum guts. After cleaning & re-assembly, the center pumpkin & outer cases took exactly the amount the manual recommended. I suspect the PO often neglected regular maintenance, so on the rare occasion he did any maintenance, he tried to make up for it by pumping lots of grease in all at once, instead of a little grease at regular intervals. Granted, it took 37 years for mine to get loaded up with excess grease, but I will probably hit mine with a shot or two every 6 months to a year from now on- gear oil with a little grease in it probably isn't a bad thing, but enough grease to displace all the gear oil might be detrimental.

Thank you for the responses.

Before getting this feedback, I replaced the oil in the wheel gear cases, then pumped 35 shots of moly grease in each king pin!

I could flush it with some diesel fuel to try to get out some of that what is surely gobs of grease in the chamber,

or I could just leave it alone for now.

I'm thinking maybe a shot per year, if that.
