I was changing the oil on my B7100, drained the old oil and put in 3.9 liters (4.1 qts) as per manual. I checked the dipstick and it was way overfilled, removed about a liter of oil and now it's filled to the top mark of the dipstick. But now is should only be filled with about 2.9 liters of oil (3 qts), which is significantly less that what the manual says.

Who can enlighten me as to what is going on here.

There was no water in the oil and it starts ok. I'm getting about 20-25 psi at idle. Are you thinking gunked up coolant/oil in the engine? Because I doubt that's the issue.

Check the rubber plug on the dipstick. It is not uncommon for the rubber to work loose from the metal rod, allowing the rod to slide up or down in relation to the engine.

Mine is still firmly stuck on the rod, I even compared it to a picture of a new one to see if the plug was is the right position. (It is)

I'm digging around the web a bit, and I seem to run into two different oil capacities for a B7100. One source says 3.9l (4.1 qts) and another says 3.1l (3.3 qts). That second one is pretty much what mine takes.. Is there a difference in capacity between older and newer models? Mine is a D750A, so maybe that's the issue?

I'm experiencing exactly the same issue with a G6200 HST. Service manual says 3.9L, but the dipstick reads a good 2 inches above the full mark. I've got a steady dribble of oil coming out of the blowby tube. I ordered a new valve cover gasket so I could check the baffle on the inside and it's fine. I even bought a new dip stick and it matches my old one exactly.

I'm honestly thinking of just filling it to the full mark on the stick regardless of what the manual says and seeing what happens.

Question about all the oil that comes out?

Ever measure the amount that came out? I typically have an empty container that I place the old oil into when finished.....I often find it is a bit lower that WHAT should go in!

So either the engine is burning it - possible, OR all of the oil is not getting out of the engine, and thus adding back 4 quarts or there about does place it over the line on dipstick!

My BX as many others I’ve seen are off also. My manual calls for 3.7 QTs and mine takes 4.5 and it’s still not right full.

Is this the original engine? Seems to be a capacity change in the engine during the time B7100's were produced.

Yes there were several changes made in the B7100's life time.

On any model, go by the dipstick not the book! ;)
