I have a great running 1980 B7100 HST 2-wheel that I'm trying to fix all the little items that have gone un-fixed over the years. The front lights have never worked and the hour meter just stopped. I pulled the dash and found the following (see pic). I want to get the hour meter going again so I can keep a tight-eye on my service schedule and I really want the headlights to work when I'm plowing snow at night.

I'm really good with mechanical things-it's always pretty easy for me to find my way with these things however electrical items are a challenge for me. Don't get me wrong, I'll dig into electrical items and I usually solve them eventually, but it's a struggle.

It appears the item pictured is a heatsink-what does it do? Also, is there any chance if recommended that I could find a new replacement?

I do have the electrical diagram for this tractor and I'm working with it to better understand the entire layout.

Thanks in advance for your help

The item in that picture is the voltage regulator/rectifier. It changes the AC voltage from the dynamo (generator) to Dc voltage to charge the battery.
I have attached a wiring diagram.

I was having the same sort of issues with my B7100 I found a broken wire to the headlights and the fuses were not making good contact. So I replaced them with the modern inline fuse that takes the plug in ATC fuse. Got lights now in all the right places. I suspect you also have a battery problem with the burnt wires on the regulator.

I appreciate the help. I'm off to find a new regulator-the current wires are not repairable.

I can find a regulator for a b7200 but not a b7100. My guess is that I'll need to find another model that has the same part?

I believe your looking for part # 15372-64602 and it seems to be available for the 7100.

Part is ordered-thank you oldenglish

Jim, should I have the battery tested? It's less than a year old and I've never had a problem with it holding a charge to date. Please let me know your thoughts. I'd like to avoid frying another regulator-thanks

I am not a fan of testing a battery that is not giving you any trouble. The test puts a strain on the battery unnecessarily. I just thought from the looks of the burnt wires on the regulator that it was probably not charging and you might be having issues.
