I recently had to move about 40 yards of dirt when I started to notice what I believe are clutch issues, mainly in reverse gear. Sometimes, while in reverse with the clutch out, the tires won't spin and the engine is not bogging down. This was most evident when I was trying to use my bucket to pull dirt out that spilled into my ditch. I first noticed this a few weeks ago, so I took the clutch pedal linkage apart and made an adjustment (per the manual) to assure I had some clutch free play. It worked for another day, but then I noticed the same thing again.

The tractor seems to be fine in the forward gears, except for a harsher, more abrupt engagement than how it used to be. I have only noticed this in reverse and when the clutch does engage, I can feel a shudder. When a clutch is worn, does it normally show up with the reverse gear first? Could it be something else besides the clutch?

I have it going to the dealer Saturday morning, but wanted to pick the experts brain first? Thanks!!

Can't help but wonder, due to recent problems I have experienced,is your tractor gear or hst? If hst I'm inclined to think about further focus on the reverse relief valve

Mike's tractor is geared.

Mike - I wonder if you are at that point where the clutch is worn, and as for reverse being worse, that is a very low gear typically with a good amount of torque being applied, the reverse gear could have more wear on it too than the others, thus the shuddering effect. If you have already addressed the linkage - I bet a split is in your cards soon!:(

Are you in R1 or R2?
R2 is somewhere between 4th and 5th in ratio.
R1 is still a higher ratio than 1st so you will notice the clutch going out quicker in reverse the forward.
If you want to make a better call on the clutch going out, put it up against a rock or something else unmovable put it in 6th and let out on the clutch it should just about do nothing. ;)
