Hi everyone, I have just purchased a B6200D, on inspection the left rear brake was not working, the seller told me it needed adjustment! Thinking it may be only need brake pads replacement, I went through with the purchase. After further inspection I have discovered that the brake shaft was broken, the pads and drum had welded together with rust, I guess someone drove it and sheared the brake shaft. My question now is how do I replace the broken shaft?? Thanks

Its relatively easy. You have to remove the axle case from the center section and replace the differential shaft. Do the seals and sleeve (220 and 230) while you are in there.

You would first disassemble the brakes,

Then remove the rear axle case

then you'll get to the shaft:

Thank you very much that is very helpful, just hope I can get the right shaft before I tear into it.

You say that, but in all my years this is the first one I've seen / heard of that was sheared???
I do say that and I am speaking from personal experience. I have had it happen twice on my B7200. Thats why I knew exactly what he was talking about. So now you know of 3 occurenxes

ISTR both of mine fractured right at the base of the splines. I just had the reverse shaft (???) fracture in the same way. Thats what triggered my purchase of a new L3901.

Dan
When I had my 1928 Buick I had 2 axles break and I learned from a machinist why it was happening. He told me that when the axles were machined the spline area had a square cut instead of a tapered cut. It was his opinion that if the axles were made with a tapered cut they wouldn't break at the splined area. I have no idea if this is just a theory or a known fact in machining. I sold the car before I broke any more axles, however, I do know that today those axles are in short supply.
