Cold here but still in the teens and twentys.I preheat plugs for about 60 seconds engine fires then I preheat for another 10 seconds. I cut back to half throttle and engine runs for several minutes then slowley dies out like it is starving for fuel.I have treated fuel and can`t imagine that I have a jelling problem and the fuel filter is fairly new.Any ideas ?

I had Zetor 70 hp tractor last year and we had -25 Celsius one time. I had to heat up the heater for 2 hours (1500 Watts) and barely started it along with Ether.

and I drove down to the parking lot and engine died on me right on highway and it starts and dies again...
and I look into glass fuel filter and diesel fuel tank... and I found diesel turning into jel.

Of course, I had diesel fuel conditioner in it. but obviously wasn't enough.
So I put three times more than recomended conditioner and in a few minutes... engine running soooooooooooooooo smooth.

So... in my experience... Try to put some more fuel conitioner and see how it respond.

I hope it is only coldness problem for you...... no other expensive trouble.

Good luck.

Joe.

Joe. Thank`s for the quick reply. The thought of adding more conditioner did come to mind but I did not want to over do it and cause another problem.I didn`t think it was that cold and the tractor is in the barn.I`ll take your advice and give it a double dose and see what happens.
Thank`s again,
Patrick

I have always thought that more conditioner is better too, but, my service mechanic for our heavy equipment through work (one of the largest equipment rental companies in the US) advises that too much of the wrong kind of additives will hinder the anti-gelling process. Hesuggests that the wax/parrafin in diesel will build up in the lines and filter walls and cause as much issues as the gelling. (I always thought this was the same thing) He recommends the proper HIGH quality winter diesel by itself and if needed use Howes supplement (ask a trucker about this too). He kept a multi-million dollar fleet of trucks and dozers, excavators, reach forks and etc. working all this winter and many before in Kansas even with one of the coldest winters on record here in 2009-10. Clean filters, high quality clean fuel and not "too much" of the wrong treatment. Works for him anyway and I had less issues this year than when I did it the other way. I would tend to think his thinking process of the WRONG additive has the most validity since quality fuel from the credible supplier should be a given. I bought fuel from the wrong (least expensive) supplier in bulk before and paid the price at the end instead of the beginning.

Oh man, you poor poor soles! I feel bad for you guys with the temps you are having, I can't even imagine -25C

I feel bad mentioning this, but for the past week we have been in the low 80's (F) and the A/C is on driving to work.

I did learn from a fuel delivery guy and from a few other people that around the winter time most highway and off road diesel it already pretreated with conditioner in the diesel. It was told to me that you need to treat it further if you have it siting around in fuel cans at your home. There can be a problem too with diesel turning sour {for a lack of a better word} if diesel sits to long in a fuel can or storage tank it can get moldy and a fungus will begin to grow in the tanks after time. So thats something to consider as well is try to keep fresh diesel on hand if possible.
