I'm new to Tractors.. I have much automotive repair experience but this Little Kubota is my first real tractor.. :)

Anyhow, the valve cover is weeping oil.. Can I just purchase a new gasket from a dealer or are there other resources to look at..

Can I pull the gasket and clean it, dry it then use gray rtv or black..

And

The throttle lever returns to idle position in use.. When I first bought the little guy the lever would just stay where put.. But over the last month the lever goes right back to idle position as if there is no friction to hold it in place.. From what I guess this is controlled by the fuel pump?

And lastly.. How in the world do you figure out where the ideal rpm is to run these guys..

With out an RPM meter (tach) it seems like a shot in the dark..

Lets start at the top, I would think that if you were going to take the old gasket off to clean it.......go ahead and buy a new one, should not be to awful bad of a price!:)

As for the throttle, there ought to be a nut/bolt combo that will have a friction disk under it, the disk is worn or broken, and or you might need to tighten the nut bolt combo - or it might have another type of "hold" position, some have springs, others have friction washers.

Trace the pivot point down, and you ought to be able to see where the problem is located.

As for RPM's - this is an age old question!:)

If you are running a PTO device - 540 should be about 85% -90% throttle.
If you are putting around it really doesnt matter.

I on most diesels, run (if I am doing "work") at 75%-95% to hit the power or torque the situation demands. Hard to tell on the throtte? Run it WTFO and then back off a bit.....you will be in the sweet spot of the engines "power"
It will not hurt the engine to run WOT, but most of us feel that it is "overpowering" the engine........Kubota designed this pups to run long and strong, unless abused - it will run 4000 hours + at WOT! I hate to see someone baby a diesel, and or the hydraulic pumps. I use to get my butt chewed if I was "operating" a trackhoe and I was under running the engine.....hell I was nervous as a cat on the proverbial hot tin roof!:D and didnt want to hurt "it":)

Thanks for replying 85Hokie,

I would be the person babying it.. I named the little guy Snoop Kubota because he lives in a little one room shack that looks like Snoopy's dog house..

anyhow,, It's the age of the tractor that worries me more than anything since finding new parts aren't as easy..

I wasn't sure what the original gasket is made out of.. Cork can be problematic when trying to remove so would love to get a new one.. I believe Snoop is from 78..

For the throttle there is a nylok nut with thread Loctite and I imagine a washer underneath it.. Wasn't sure if there was a rubber oring one the spindle and if this was creating the pressure to hold the throttle arm..

The linkage from the throttle lever to the arm on the pump is straight shot.. I'll take a closer look tomorrow.. I did clean it with brake cleaner to clean up any oil or fuel residue since I had to bleed the injectors as I ran him out of fuel.. Does seem this may have led to the problems maybe..

Is the pump part of the front cover? Are they easily rebuilt? Is this something that is common?

Thanks for the throttle info. I have found that when I hit a certain rpm maybe 1/2-5/8 throttle he becomes a whole different kind of machine.. :)

I am always amazed at the power this little guy has..

I would try tightening down the valve cover, first, it might just be a little loose.
You can get a tiny-tach tachometer to work on it, but you have to go to their web site, and order the correct size injector line transducer...
