B2710 intermittent starting

Hi Folks.
I just bought a B2710. It turns over good. Have starting issues. Guy that sold it to me says sometimes the governor shuttoff sticks and you have to go out and give the lever a flick. He wasnt kidding. It has to be done pretty much all the time. Can anyone tell me if this is an internal pump problem or would the solenoid cause this and what type of fix is involved if internal. Thx

Your going to have to explain what lever your flicking.
The governor doesn't stick on these... like never see one do that.
Now the throttle linkage sticking yep seen that, stop solenoid sticking yep seen that.

Awww the speed control plate:

Take off the cover (4 bolts) and there will be a spring attached to the throttle lever (red arrow), gently remove it, I tie a string to them before I remove them to make it much easier to find and reattach them.

With the cover off check the torsion spring (blue arrow) on the manual stop lever (that's the lever your flicking). ;)

So what could be happening
.the lever seems to have tension on it because it springs back into place when i pull and release it. It seems i have to flick it a dozen times and it finaly fires up. Do u think the lever the spring is attached to is not spinning all the way when the lever is in the rest position.or could the internal spring be week. I cant see how an external spring would do it any good as the lever goes back into place. I apologize for my confusion.

If the lever is returning solidly the problem isn't the spring and likely is the engine stop solenoid sticking.

It is certainly possible that something is sticking in there. I have never had one do it though.

If you pull the control plate off you might be able to confirm some things like what's sticking.

It might be the throttle lever is sticking or it might be the rack on the injection pump, and yes it could be the governor has an issue, but they don't normally have an issue like that.
Also if the governor was sticking, it wouldn't stop it from starting it would only cause it to rev up and not idle down, as the governor has no bearing on the stop function.

FYI: When the Previous owner said "when I wiggle the governor it becomes unstuck" he's not wiggling the governor he's wiggling the control plate control control.

Yes i am led to believe now that it is sticking at the rack. Is there any easy way to get at it to free it up or would the whole fuel rack cam assembly have to be removed. Unfortunately for me i cant afford shop rates at a kubota dealer. So if flicking the manual shut off lever is not releasing the fuel rail shutoff to restart it then maybe it is slowley releasing back to open as im cranking engine. Again im shooting with blinders on.

The fuel rack is in the Injection pump, but don't jump the gun yet, pull the speed control plate off first as I've seen issues with that plate making the rack stick too.

And yes with all of out help you'll be able to do the repairs on it yourself without paying a shop to do it. :D

Thank you so much. It is 25 below here today. Difficult to keep the garage warm. I will wait until the weekend when it is supposed to warm up and will give it a shot. Just wondering what precautions to take when removing that cover plate. Is there any chance of anything falling apart?

Sorry I can't give details about the repairs, but I would recommend:

1. Clean the area around the plate to minimize dirt intrusion.
2. Take pictures as you proceed with disassembly.
3. Make shaft/part orientations with a permanent marker or similar it the event it is needed.

I hope it turns out to be a simple fix.

Just the one spring attachment that I noted, and like 200mph said, clean around it before opening it up.

If it's got a loader, most of the time it's way easier to work on it with the loader off.
Take pictures as you go and if anything doesn't feel or look right don't force it, and ask for help. ;)
