My Piranah bar arrived last week and the directions are pretty straightforward except my bucket has a bolt-on flat edge. Do I remove that when mounting the tooth bar, or mount over it? On the photos on the BXattachment site, it looks like there is no bolt-on flat edge, but it also looks like the bucket doesn’t have any holes in it either, so is it possible that not all buckets have this edge? I assumed it was there as a replaceable item to save the bucket edge. My tractor is brand new and that blade has already taken a beating! Here are some mock-up photos that show the tooth bar with the blade and without.

Apologies for the double photos.
I just spoke to the people at HardParts and they said my bar was designed to be used with or without the bolt-on flat edge.

so it seems like there is no right or wrong answer. I like the ide of leaving the bolt-on edge on the bucket because it will make things easier when I want to remove the tooth-bar and not have to reinstall it, but it seems to me the tooth bar would be stronger if I mounted it directly. Am I over thinking this?

Interesting. As you noted, it appears to work either way. I don't know why one way would be better than the other.

The only disadvantage I can think of, which is very minimal at best, is you have the weight of two bars cutting into your overall loader capacity. Yet, that is so small, I personally wouldn't worry about it.

Curious to see which way you decide.

I went with leaving the bolt-on edge. Installation went as planned. Only thing I would do is get longer bolts. It came with 1 1/4 in. 3/4” bolts, but I had to use C-clamps in order to get the lock washers on. I plan on replacing them with 1 1/2 in. long bolts.

Am going to use the bar before the rains come later. Will report back on how well it went.

Looks like the Piranha does not utilize the 7 bolt holes used to attach the Kubota bolt-on cutting edge.

Mounting with the existing cutting edge results in slightly longer bucket length, making unintentional contact with bucket & other items more likely :oops:but I'd try that first.

Edit: looks good! (y)

Only downside of leaving replaceable edge on and bolting to that is weight. - however, an advantage is that from the seat - you can see the teeth longer when trying to level out a dig.

I would think leaving the bar on would help protect the integrity of that straight edge of the bucket when using the tooth bar in challenging conditions.

Trust me..... There is some learning curve to using the piranha bar .....regardless of how it is set up..
I got mine to keep ware off the bucket edge while moving snow on our gravel drive.. With frost as much as 2 meters deep some years, gravel can be just as abrasive as concrete.. But until you learn bucket angle, you will dig gravel occasionally...

I don't have to do much digging very often, but the piranha bar makes it much easier..

Definitely improves the ‘digging’ capability of the loader. I’m in the process of trying to reduce the steepness of a slope behind my garage and the tooth bar definitely has more bite. 🙄

In addition, I am looking to spread some of the dirt I remove so I am guessing I will have to remove the tooth bar to do any back dragging.

You won't have to remove it, once you get use to it.. back dragging will be as easy as without it.

Have the same setup without the bolt-on edge (have the holes for it though.) From the pics posted, looks like the piranha bar supports are riding on the bolt-on edge instead of the bucket. I don't know if that is an issue? Note: Also had to use C-clamps to make the supplied bolts work.

I have on on my B2320. When back dragging my driveway I get a much better result by taking it off.
But the Piranha is great for uprooting small trees and breaking into hardened soil.
Two bolts and 2 minutes on or off.....not a bad deal.

Mine has been on for a year. I back-drag dirt a lot and gravel occasionally and have never felt the need to remove it yet... I vote for the extra volume also but I did not have a bolt one to have to make the choice myself.

For my soil (which is filled with various percentages of rock - ugh) it makes all the difference in the world even when loading previous spoils/worked material. With the straight edge, I could NEVER get a full bucket.

edit - as some have noted in previous threads, be careful how you rest it or walk around it - It will take out your Achilles!

I had a piranha toothbar on my BX. I left the cutting edge on. Preferred having it on as it took the abuse so that the bucket didn’t have to. With my B2601, I went with the wicked toothbar which they said the cutting edge had to be removed. Either way, the toothbar should take most of the wear in lieu of the bucket/cutting edge, so I don’t think there is a wrong answer either way.
