I recently purchased a used B2400 HST with about 440 hours. Shortly after I brought the tractor home, it started to make a noise when backing up. The noise seems to be coming from the front end and is sort of a honking sound that increases in frequency as the tractor's reverse speed increases. The noise happens in 2WD and 4WD.

I purchased the tractor from a private party, so I'm not under any kind of warranty. I would appreciate any thoughts on the cause and potential fixes.

Honking... can you be a bit more descriptive? When I think of "honk" I think of Canadian geese. I don't think that is what you mean... or I at least hope not:eek:

This is a great site with proplr that only want others to enjoy their tractors as much as they do... so bear with us and and let's "noodle" through the honking issue.
Welcome to the site.... Butch

Hello, is the honking a back up alarm possibly? No idea, just a thought.

Welcome to the site!

Butch, I think our pal Jimmy is on to something

It only happens in reverse and increases in frequency the faster he goes.

I'm betting Jimmy's money on the back up alarm

I am sitting here having a cup of coffee, getting ready for work and thinking about the "honking" sound. If it is a back up alarm, it is probably loaded up with dirt and whatever else and does not sound the way it should, or maybe the speaker for the alarm has seen it better days and no longer beeps, but sounds more like a honk.

Thank you for the welcome and for the help. I have climbed all over the tractor looking for a back-up alarm, but I can't seem to find one. If the tractor has a back-up alarm, where should I find it?

Well, if it is a back up alarm it could be just about anywhere and look like anything. I would think that most people would place a sitch to trigger such an alarm amongst the directionl control linkage. Did you look below the bedals under the tractor with in the directional control leankage for a switch that just doesn't look right?

Do you have a way of contacting previous owners and asking about the noise or horn insatll?

Other options could be to have somebody walk along while you are backing up to help locate the area of origin - or - place it on jacks BEING VERY CAREFUL to try and locate the noise.

Just wondering and I know you have an HST but have you by chance done any of this:

1) Does the sound ONLY happen when the tractor is actually moving backward? For instance, engine running, push in the clutch and press the reverse pedal. Does it make the sound?

2) With the tractor moving in reverse and you hear the sound, try pushing in the clutch and NO directional pedal pressed (you are coasting). Do you still hear the noise?

3) Following step 2, with tractor coasting backward and the clutch pressed in and holding. Press the revesre directional pedal in. Do you hear the noise?

Hope some of this helps,

Scott

Hey man I need an old tractor for my farms. DO you know some reliable source to purchase old tractors?
