Since you have back up machines, I'd consider not doing anything until fall, if you start tearing it down now, you'll have parts and pieces and everything open. I'd just read the manual. As always do as you feel is best.

I vote for low compression based on crankcase venting some gases while running. Once it's got a little heat in the engine it'll run "ok", but when cool, barely starts. Almost a telltale sign of low engine compression. Check valve clearance first. They're probably ok but check anyway. If ok you're gonna have to pull the head and inspect. Likely dusted is my guess. You might be able to see some sign of very fine dust in the intake tube. If you do, plan on a rebuild.

Second: I have now started leaving the tractor at an idle when i need to get off, and when I do the blow by on the left side of the engine from the breather tube that appears to be going to the valve cover is voluminous. Its a not wet to the touch and not black in color just gray and its unreal how much is expelled through the breather tube.
There is no sense in checking the valve lash, if it has that much blow by, you will need to disassemble the engine and see if it is rebuildable. It has either had a large amount of dust sucked through it or it has been overheated and the cylinder walls are scored.

True. I really wasn't thinking of that, was thinking about another one of my many projects which has low compression. Thanks for correction.
