Last week I asked advice on buying a b1750. I have not bought it. The dealer put it through the shop and have advised me it is developing hydrostatic issues, and begins to slow down after about 20 minutes use. They reduced the price dramatically and it is being sold as is. I'm intrigued. Are good used hydro units hard to find? Are they difficult to rebuild and where do you get parts or kits? Also,is the hydro used in that tractor used in other units and how would I find out what ones?
Should I just run?

Depends on how good you are at turning spanners and how much time and money you want to invest to get a working tractor? Once you get into the HST you'll probable need some gauges and adapters, special tools etc.

When I was younger I would have probably gone and pushed the dealer for a much better price than his reduced price, to get it off his lot, then worked on it for hours/days, being aware it may cost me big $$$ and lots of time in the long run. These days I'd prefer to pay extra $$$ for a better unit up front with some warranty and not have the need to have it pulled apart in the garage so much!
North Idaho Wolfman, whitetiger or others will hopefully chime in with more info regarding the HST.
Good luck with it if you decide to venture down the repair path.

I'd pass on it. If the dealer doesn't even want to fix it I'm pretty certain I wouldn't want to tackle it. He might have a great price on it, but the big unknown seems to be what's it really going to cost you in the end.

I'd pass also. Why buy a project unless it's an absolute bargain? Like you pay for the tires and wheels that you can use on another tractor you already own, and if you get it going it's a bonus!!

Kinda surprised at the negativity. I'm not a rich man( unless you count my wife and daughters then I am). In my life I've been a red seal machinist(25 years, till I lost my hearing) a certified marine mechanic(12 years) and recently a manager of a small hydraulic/ machine shop. Never been afraid of a project but was hoping to hearing some replies more specific to what may be the problem, remedy and parts availability/ interchangeability( ie the hydrostatic was also used on models xxxx, yyyy and xyzzy.
The tractor is priced at about 1/3 market value, and the dealer only keeps the most recent models on the lot

The reason your getting the negative feed back is that, information and parts are on HST's are hard to get.
I couldn't even tell you what units used that same HST, it's not an easy thing to cross reference.
You could get it and end up with a parts orphan and nobody want that for you.
To complicate things even more, there where two different HST's used in that model.

I went ahead and bought it,it runs and handles excellent, only used it aa shot time at the dealership and could not replicate the problem they pointed out.
Unfortunately due to depending on family to help haul it,work schedule and moving my eldest daughter into her dorm at university next weekend,it will be a couple weeks until I can actually get it home and start to figure out what to do with it.

Check it out really well, it wouldn't be the first time that a bad HST turned out to be something else like a simple worn clutch. ;)

So I got the known "history" of the tractor. Guy bought it,used it once, noticed it slowing down after mowing for awhile. Brought it to the dealership.they mowed with it,found it did the same thing, contacted the customer, who decide he wanted to trade on a zero turn. I think I will begin either a fluid and filter change,as well as cleaning the strainers
