Hi all, and before I forget, thanks for the help on my water pump job. I think that I might have a throw-out bearing going out but not sure. I made a short video so you guys and hear the problem. Just started out of nowhere. Guess I can't post the video here. Has anyone had a throw out bearing just go out sitting still with no sign of the bearing starting to go out? Do you know what else could make this grinding/whining noise? Thank you for your consideration. Let me try this link to the video---

I would agree with you - sounds like you are on the right track with the throw out bearing, that is IF it is still around!

Throw out bearings normally are not asked to work until the clutch is DEPRESSED…. not when the clutch is “let out” as you state.

If this is occurring when the clutch is “let out”….it sounds as if the transmission has gears in the almost-but-not-quite engaged position. Try moving the gear selection thru all the positions, then back to neutral and see if that doesn’t alleviate things.

In the famous last words of Buster Scruggs "Well that an't good". Block wheels real well or chain tractor so it can't unexpectedly move more than a few inches forward or backwards and while lying on back or with mirror lying on ground beneath driver's station watch propeller shaft as HST pedal is engaged to drive forward and backwards. If shaft is rapidly turning but tractor doesn't try to move the problem is with transmission. If shaft doesn't turn, turns intermittently or only turns slowly the problem is at clutch. Is that a winch on front of tractor? Does it ever cause rear tires to come off ground? Winches, snow plows, fels and backhoes often bust these tractor in half where clutch meets engine block.

Thanks for your reply. I will go through it again tomorrow. She bit me pretty good today trying to depress the clutch pedal with my right hand while I was trying to check the linkage under the tractor and the pedal slipped out of my hand and raked a few inches of skin off my arm along the tendon!! I did go through all the levers that looked like they might be the source of the problem but got no change. Maybe I just did not move the lever far enough. thanks again.

thanks for your reply-- The winches on the front of the tractor were mounted there by the PO. He made a homemade front-end loader that the winches operated. Took me one day of trying to backfill ditches to tear the hinges off the bucket he built. I chuckle every time I think about Buster Scruggs, that is good entertainment. I'm going the try going through all the levers that shift anything anywhere on the tractor tomorrow and see if I just overlooked something. If that fails then I guess I'll have to chain the tractor to the barn and corral like you suggested and go through your suggested inspection. It just seems like a throwout bearing would have talked a little more before it just quit. Someone else said that the bearing would not squawk when the clutch is let out so I'm hoping that I just knocked something a little out of gear. thanks again will see tomorrow.

As stated above, a throw-out bearing shouldn't be making noise in neutral as it doesn't contact the plate fingers until you depress the clutch. It sounds like something may be out of alignment, specifically like the tips of two gears are lightly touching and not fully engaged. I've done this occasionally and it sounds similar to your noise.

Also, as stated above, the older B-series have an area you need to keep an eye on if you have a loader (without a subframe), winch, or 3PT mounted backhoe. That's the area where the engine plate mounts to the engine. As you use the machine with the above attachments, that plate starts to fatigue and separate away from the block. Once it separates 1/16-1/8 of an inch, the machine can be hard to start, makes noises, or your clutch randomly explodes. Depending on how you were using the machine before you parked it, it's possible that may have had something to do with it.

I'm sorry to hear about your injury and want to help prevent another by chaining tractor down NOW before it runs over you. Tractor might catch and lurch at any moment while fiddling with levers and pedals.
I'm not suggesting throw out bearing as the culprit. In post #9 N3BP explains in more detail what I'm talking about. I encourage looking into this possibility right away rather than running engine any more than necessary. If the coupling plate failed as N3BP described the noise is metal chunks and pieces of pressure plate and clutch that can damage flywheel, crankshaft, propeller shaft, clutch housing and other parts. If you look up prices of flywheel and clutch housing you will understand why I urge you not delay looking into and hopefully eliminating exploded clutch assembly as the noise.
