Good Day

I have a B1750 that will pop start and run but when you turn the key you get no light on dash and not able to start. Battery is good.. there is voltage to the starter. Both wires? there is voltage to the key switch.
What else could check? i see relay tucked down under the dash that I am going to try to get to.

any incite would be greatly appreciated.

thanx MJ

Sounds like a blown fuse. Is there a cover on the dash with a knob to unscrew. Should be 4 bus fuses in it. If the relay is tucked back and bolted by the fuel tank, that works for the clutch safety switch. Wires go from the starter to the key switch then to the fuse block. Then to the relay ;) thats if it's the same set up as my l1501

Could be a bad solenoid, relay to solenoid... etc.

Fuse should only affect the one run, unless it's got some kind of main fuse for the whole system, and if that is blown, I'd look for some sort of major short from the box back, those should never blow unless you get a dead short across multiple systems, like melting an entire wiring harness (don't ask how I know... :p )

I've troubleshot my fair share of starter's, rebuilt a couple but invariably it's either the solenoid or something in the starter.

You can try to jump straight from the battery to the solenoid, if it cranks over, the issue is before the solenoid.

thank you both for your reply so far. I don't have a main fuse on the dash. I will look further behind it though. I will try to jump straight from the battery to the solenoid. but i have no lights and no lights on the dash either will the starter solenoid have something to do with that too?

thanx

Could be a few things but, regardless, I recommend fitting new battery clamps to the cables. Over time the clamps fail where the cable is 'inserted' into the clamp. They might look okay and carry enough current to give you some lights but they won't turn over a starter.

Also it could be the clutch safety switch.

thank you for the responses so far.
while digging behind the dash i found a broken spade in the connector from the key switch. Its the red/white stripe to solid red wire. I put a test light on it. white the test light was hooked up i was able to get a click. still no dash lights.

i need to replace the connector. where can i get a pigtail to cut in for it? suggestions?

before i found he broken wire i tried jumping from battery to starter and got nothing, not even a spark. the battery at the time had 10volts

i will replace the battery clamps. and continue to dig around.

On the spasde connector, there should be a small locking pin that you can get to with a small screw driver from an eye glass repair kit. Might take a little pushing and tugging to get the old one out. If you can't locate a new locking spade for it a regular spade with out the coating will work. Strip and crimp the new spade to the wire. Put the pin connector back together, and then insert the new spade with a pair of needle nose pliers. Then add a little electrical tape to the back side to make sure in doesn't short out if the new spade sticks out a little bit further :)

If your only getting 10 volts out of the battery it's possible that it's dead too.
Pull it out and take it to an auto parts store and have it tested.

You should be able to jump from the battery cable terminal connection on the starter to the small spade terminal and it should crank.

thank you everyone for your suggestions. As i was going the the wire harness I found 2 broken connections within the a couple connectors. 1 was in the key connection red wire. the other was one of the wires to the relay under the dash left side.

I fixed one and bypassed the connection and made my own. tractor came back to life

life is good again

thanx
