I have found a B1700 at a small dealer in another city. They took it in on trade this past fall. Apparently, they sent it out with a customer for a "test". The customer called them to come pick it up. He said it was smoking heavily. The dealership ruled out antifreeze in the engine and figures it needs a ring job. I went to look at it after the weather warmed up, and witnessed the following. It was very very hard to start. The dealer cranked the engine for a long time. There was lots of heavy black smoke spewing out of the exhaust as it tried to fire. When it finally caught, it blew out a good cloud of black smoke, then ran fine. I never once noticed blue smoke, that I would associate with burning oil, and the oil level was good. Someone I talked with thought it could be a timing issue. Any ideas out there? There are 1100 hrs on the unit.

Sounds like the guy threw gasoline in it....common issue for people who are clueless or careless....

Hey, thanks for the reply! I gave up on checking the forum cause my post didn't seem to get any interest. I actually went and purchased the tractor yesterday! We had a very hard time getting it started to load it on the trailer. When I got home it wouldn't start again, but it was cold here, (-15C) so we just backed it trailer and all into the garage. I spent last night removing all the dash/plastic and fuel tank. I did wonder if I was smelling gasoline in the diesel! Today I am cleaning out the fuel tank, replacing the filter, and reinstall everything with fresh fuel. But that now leads me to this question; now that I have drained the fuel system, is there a way to prime the system back up so I don't have to crank and crank the engine???!!!

I also noticed on another thread mention of a spring on the bottom of the fuel filter cup, to hold the filter up. I did not have one on mine when I removed it, and looking at an illustrated parts list from Kubota, I see no spring at the bottom of the filter???

Does the tractor have a glow plug(s)? If it does, perhaps that is not really working (circuit fuse? bad glow plug? bad switch?)? And of course if none, is there a pressure relief system for starting? Any of thee can contribute to the hard starting. The smoke make me question these systems. Of course cold weather also contributes. For the glow plug, check the resistances. Also, check the voltage there.

In checking the glow plugs, they should be powered not only in the pre-heat key position, but also in the start position. Each one might have two readings, other than open. If the hot section is grounded, the reading is zero ohms. If all is OK, my book says 0.9 ohms for each. Now that is a fussy reading, since that is close to zero and the ohm meter has to be set on a low ohmage range. If you can check each individually, since they are in parallel. Checking all together will read close to zero.

After purging all the air out of the lines if it still doesn't want to start, pull the injectors out and look for wet cylinders, It will do what your stating if it has a bad injector that's flooding a piston.

Took it apart here a week ago. One wet cylinder. Checked glow plugs, they are good, had the injectors checked at a diesel shop, they are excellent. Trying to get a compression test done, cannot find an adapter small enough for the glow plug hole. This has got me stalled again. any ideas for adapters etc??
