B series vs. L series.

I'm window shopping now, for an inevitable purchase, in the near future. I need/want a FEL around and sourcing one for my B8200 (BF-300A FEL) is near impossible (if anyone has a line on a complete FEL, please PM me).

Anyway, I've been researching different models (used). Comparing pricing vs. features and what I've noticed is that B series machines seem to cost the same, or more than their L series siblings. Why is that? The L is a heavier machine at comparable horsepower ratings, from what I've gathered.
Ex; L2800 (28-30hp) with LA463 FEL's seem to be in the $12.5-14K range with really low hours. Comparable B series (ex; B2920) with the same HP ratings (29hp) and an LA364 are priced right around the same, if not more.

What's the physical differences between them? What makes the L an L and the B a B?

The L series has a bigger and heavier frame. The wider stance gives better footing on hills and the added weight gives better traction.

Okay, so yeah size and weight is a given, which is what brought me here. I'm curious why they can be found for the same price as the smaller B series machines when they have more steel (weight) and larger wheels and tires (usually).

I think part of the price is available options between the B and L series. The B series has more available options and features when compared to the L models in the same horse power class. The smaller L models are economy models and have less available features like shuttle shift, mid mount mower, or cab options.

Where the B model has an available mid mount mower, shuttle shift, and cab options.

I think a smaller L (probably an L2800) will be in my future.

The B series is built similar to a BIG lawn mower, with a "frame".

The L series is a real tractor. No frame. The transmission IS the frame, like real tractors are supposed to be built. MUCH easier to work on, BTW.

Both are good tractors. The B series doesn't have the lifting capacity obviously, so if that is a concern....

No belly mower option for the new L series that I know of. B series will accept a belly deck no problem. It's designed for it from the get-go, like a big lawn mower.

L series will accept a nice backhoe. B series will too but it's smaller and won't dig nearly as much, even with the same horsepower rating.

Found a 2010 L2800DT 'Extra Power' at a dealer not too terribly far from me. I'm gonna be contacting them about trading my B8200D and financing the L. See if we can work something out. Though I've a feeling they will low ball me big time on my current machine (which i really wouldn't mind keeping anyway, it's a good machine).


I have a zero turn that i mow with around here. It gets the job done pretty quick. No real need for a belly mower. I'm more interested in the weight and lifting capacity.
