Got my door knocker yesterday. I will be picking up the ripper and QA tonight from the post office. Gotta say, the speed of shipping is amazing from tractor attachments. Less than a week from order to arrival.
yeah yeah, rub it in ... I had to built a spreadsheet so I could calculate the lead time in weeks, lol
I think you will be very happy. I have the BXpanded thumb, quick attach, ripper and 6" trencher. I purchased the larger 16" bucket when I got my BX23S. I am looking for a narrower bucker, 8" or 12".
I got the thumb installed yesterday and played around a little both with picking things up and digging to start understanding its capabilities and limitations. This is completely new to me. I can see that the ripper will be useful in situations where a larger machine could just break roots with the bucket, so having the QA will be very helpful. Ultimately, it's a backhoe on a sub-compact tractor, and there will be plenty of things I can do with it and some where I'll need to rent an excavator. I have zero regrets, even as I learn its limitations.
I did make one mistake, which was picking something up when the thumb was in the stowed position. It worked, but I realized that the compression load wasn't going through the extension bar ... the thumb was just getting pressed against the dipper stick.
This is bad technique, right? Seems like a good way to dent the dipper stick.

I doubt that you will ever dent the dipper stick, but you might not be able to pick up what you have grabbed because of its weight.
OH cool. I'm hoping to get my QA on tomorrow (wednesday). I agree with you about the ripper. And those teeth are actually somewhat sharp!
I suppose you're right ... I'll have to take a closer to look to see what's actually taking the compressive load when the thumb is in the stowed position. It still seems like bad form though. Even with a fairly modest load, I noticed I wasn't able to get the boom fully upright ... close but not all the way up. Thinking about the forces and angles, it makes sense.
Keep in mind that the hydraulics in a BX is much lower volume and pressure than any of the other Kubota tractors. It is a very limited machine, and will not do what a B will do. For me, it has enough power for most things that I want to do, and there are days that I wish that I had bought a bigger machine, however, I can make do with the BX for most projects. It just takes a little longer.
Exactly. I bought it primarily for use in my garden, and for that the smaller size will be an advantage. I am actively cultivating the mindset of exploring its capabilities and when I find a limitation where I actually can't do something, I think "ok, that will be a job for a rented excavator" rather than experiencing any kind of regret. The fact that I can dig into the ground where a shovel would have been stopped, or carry things that I used to move around in a wheel barrow far outweighs anything else. I do hope I can plow snow or snowblow with it, and I would be a bit disappointed if I am unable to do that at all, but based on what I've read it seems like it's capable, even if a bit on the slow side.
Today I installed the quick attach. I am so loving this thing already. I haven't timed it yet, but I think I can change out the implement in well under thirty seconds.
