So true. School doesn't seem to teach them WHY the code was there in the first place. Old inspectors understand the WHY and are reasonable in how you fix a problem, even if it isn't to the letter of the code book.

More frustratingly is that the international code most places use is 50 shades of gray and ten different guys can read the same passage and come up with five different interpretations.
The engineering company is based out of Georgia and didn't check local codes.

When I built my house circa 2000, I was the “general contractor”, so for the work I performed I had to pull the permit and was the “ responsible party"

When the electrical inspector showed up, I was present and asked him to “look it over EXTRA GOOD”.

I explained to him that this was my house, and that since my family was going to be sleeping there, I was not trying to “get over” on anything.

He found 4 or 5 things and I fixed them……I was grateful, and I think he respected my position.


Now the A$$hole “inspector Overlord”, big piece of sh!T, was entirely different.

He infomed me that I had to have a “concrete step” at the back of my garage to prevent “fumes from entering the house” ……..When I explained that the back of my garage did not have an entrance to the house so no fumes could enter, he basically said ‘tough sh!t, it’s code…….no concrete step, no green sticker"

Well, 25 F’ing years later, my “concrete safety fume step” is still there, and I trip over it 4 times a year……. still…..

So if your reading this, Mr. Inspector from ————— MI,…from 2000’ish…….…F____kY—u, and kiss my a$$

Our county has gotten 'inspector crazy' (department got massive) but the inspectors, good guys. Permits reasonable priced. Quick to issue and come out and check. But you now have to get multiple permits for a job, no longer one for the whole job. Lot clearing, excavation, footing, floor pour, framing, roof, siding, windows, stairs, electric, gas, water and a final.
Only one inspector was hardcore but.... that is because he is the lead carpenters son and had to be hard on dad! The few issues the inspectors had were resolved with minimal fuss. Even then, I think it was because some 'had to find fault' to prove they were doing the job (they even said so). A few of them took me aside and told me to call them if I ever get grief and they'd smooth the ripples.
Its' like home inspectors. Even a perfect house, they will find something to note as otherwise, people will think they are not doing the job.

We owned a commercial bldg with four offices. One was being remodeled. I was instructed to install a fire extinguisher near the front door. It was a sheet rock wall and I didn't want it mounted on the wall and then they say it's in the wrong place. I call the fire marshal to get a determination since his dept would be inspecting that. He describes where he wants it from the door and "chest high".

I explain it will be in a highly visible area and want it in the correct position the first time and not relocate it. He repeats "chest high". I tried to be tactful with him but I was getting him irritated by repeating the question. About the fourth time with the same answer, I said, "I'm 6-4 my wife is 5-1, does it matter who installs it?". Give me a dimension from the floor!

When we built our place in the mountains, the lumber company shorted us an 11ft 8x8 beam to attach the floor joists to.
Being resourceful, the framing crew built a glue lam beam from 2x8s, a case of construction adhesive, and about 100 20d cement coated nails.
The framing inspector bought off the rough framing.
Later, the plumbing inspector crawled around under the cabin, said the plumbing passed, but he would not sign off on the plumbing because the glue lam beam "had no bolts in it".
"OK", I said, "what size bolts, and how many?"
He said "every 4ft", size... whatever"
WTF?
So, being a smarta$$, I said "So, two 1/4-20s?"
"Yeah whatever."
Disgusted, I let it go.
Later, I cross drilled the beam near the ends and every 2ft, and put in 10" long 1/2-13 bolts with big washers & nuts.
When he came back he never mentioned the bolts, but bought off the plumbing & electrical.
Moron.

licensed electrician / plumber REQUIRED
We needed a full survey with 5 copies
Inspection schedule was:
Excavation / Footings
Foundation
Decking
Rough frame
Rough Electric
Rough Plumbing
Insulation
Sheetrock
Finish Electric
Finish Plumbing
Final Walk Thru
BTW
As the final inspector was walking to his car.... the tax assessor showed up to revalue.

Cut to Northern N.H.

Built an entire 24 x 26 1-1/2 story log cabin next to a river.

Build permit application was an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper drawn with a sharpie
rectangle for plot /rectangle for house 2 setbacks written in.
I did all my own plumbing and electric no license. better work than in Mass
$15 fee.

Only inspector to set foot on the property was a state guy checking the septic because we were close to the protected waterway.

I ask the town about getting an occupancy permit. They said just call us when you are done and we will mail you "something".

I can relate to you. I was A licensed MA contractor, gave that up, too much BS. Moved to NH for "live free". Found out it wasn't really "free" But now one step further, we recently moved to MO. No building codes, no zoning, no permits, no tyrants, etc... I'm free to do the same great work at MUCH less the cost and frustration. And I actually feel freer.
