The Kaufman 30ft gooseneck trailer that I ordered on March 10th is currently being painted and should be ready for pick up sometime next week. Looks like I need to pencil in a 3,000 mile roadtrip. If anyone needs anything hauled from Beaver City, NE out west then let me know. 😂

I'm planning on combining a work trip with picking up the trailer. The company pays $0.70/mile and they seem to be ok with that. Flights, car rental, airport parking and gas typically cost them $1,800 or so each trip, and I made it clear that I'm not looking to make money from this endeavor, just trying to offset the cost of picking up the trailer by rolling it into a work trip.

I am really looking forward to this trailer. I could have used it last weekend to be honest.

Out of curiosity, why are you picking it up so far away?

Kaufman has two locations for factory-direct pricing and pickup. One is in Beaver City, NE and the other is in Lexington, NC. Shipping to my location would be $1,350 but I would need to have equipment to unload a 7,000 lb trailer with a 30ft deck. No doubt arranging for the proper equipment or business to do that would add more cost.

I received confirmation from the CFO this afternoon that they'll give me $0.70/mile for the round-trip based on the shortest route in Google Maps. This amounts to $2,177 and change. So that's my break-even budget for fuel, accommodation and food for six days and a little over 3,000 miles. I can't imagine it costing that much, and I won't even need to use any vacation days for this trip. I'll put in a week of work before heading home via Kaufman's facility.

I love road-trips so this will feel like a vacation, and I get to pull a nice, new trailer home. 🙂

I gotcha. That males aense if it's not really gonna cost you anything I thought maybe there would have been a dealer closer. But if you are getting travel paid for why not.

I didn't look into Kaufman's dealer network and not even sure if they have one. Their appeal for many is the factory-direct pricing with reasonable delivery costs, and it was in my head from the beginning that I could combine a business trip with picking up a trailer to reduce my cost.

The local PJ trailer dealer where I've purchased three PJ and a MidSota trailer has a similar trailer to the Kaufman I've ordered but it's close to 50% more expensive and certainly not 50% better! Dealer markup, shipping, prep etc., all add to base price, not to mention the fact that PJ charges a premium based on their name, but their quality has suffered in the last 6 years or so.

Choosing a trailer is an interesting task. There are many subtleties in how they're made, the GVWR, location of the axles, etc., and this is the most informed trailer purchase I've made. I don't see myself outgrowing this one. I will almost definitely make some upgrades though.

I reached out to Throttle Down Kustoms yesterday to ask about the front bumper that I ordered a couple of months ago. They're in Moore, MT which is around 325 miles from me, and I opted to pick up the bumper rather than pay $250 for shipping.

Moore, MT is basically on the way as I head back from Beaver City, NE through Sheridan, WY. The bumper will be ready next week, and although I wanted to have it installed prior to the trip out east, at least I can make a stop on the way home and roll that pickup into this little adventure.

The only downside to all of this is that I can't take my dog with me. She loves to ride in the trucks or Jeep and would have really enjoyed this trip. I will miss her for sure.

And you get to do all this in an awesome new truck. You should really get to know the truck on a trip like this; you'll have to give us a report on how it did and how you like it when you get back!

I picked up the trailer this morning and towed it about 500 miles to Sheridan, WY. I was able to do the brake "break in" as instructed by Kaufman on some roads leaving Beaver City. It tows as straight as an arrow, and at one point I got up to 90 mph to pass some 18-wheelers and no issues at all.

I have one word to describe the F-450 and that's incredible! The truck is exceptional and I couldn't be more impressed.

First photo at the Kaufman facility in Beaver City, and the last three are here in Sheridan, WY. It sure is green at the moment. I'll be using the new trailer this weekend to haul the M6060 and RC3712 over to my friend's property. His field has waist high grass at present. Actually, I'm picking up the new TDK front bumper tomorrow on my way home so I'll have them place it on the trailer since the bed is otherwise occupied.

With a little over 3,400 miles covered on the drive out to Illinois and back via Beaver City, NE to pick up the trailer, and Moore, MT to pick up the front bumper, I've really become familiar with all of the features of the truck and I couldn't be happier with the F-450. Seriously, it's easily the best truck I've ever owned, and not just by a bit but by a massive margin. Come to think of it, it's possibly the best vehicle I've ever owned and I've owned a lot over the years including multiple vehicles from Audi, Lexus, Acura, Ford, Subaru and Chrysler.

The last 1,200 miles of the trip was pulling the Kaufman trailer so I became familiar with the numerous features related to towing. I really like that the F-450 is configurable to whatever is required with different driving modes. I completely forgot to use the "Economy" mode when not pulling the trailer. I was in "Normal" mode for a little over 2,000 miles.

The trailer support is truly exceptional with integrated trailer brake controller, and both manual and automatic exhaust brake modes. The "Towing" mode results in the engine and transmission optimizing the towing experience, and with adaptive cruise control turned on with the exhaust brake in automatic mode it's a towing dream. I also really like the ability to choose various displays in the dash with a separate Trip logger for a trailer, in addition to Trip 1 and Trip 2. Also, the heads up display changes depending on which driving mode is selected. I averaged about 11.3 mpg pulling the 7,000lb trailer at speeds between 65mph and 80mph, but mostly around 75mph. Also, the elevation is increasing significantly from Beaver City via Sheridan, WY and eventually to Kalispell.

I could go on and on about how incredible the F-450 is, and the fact that I've been on the road for six days, with around 8 to 9 hours of driving each day without once feeling tired says a lot. The truck has so many great features. It's quiet, there's so much smooth power on hand, the transmission is outstanding, it's very comfortable, it handles well, the displays are superb, the sound system is excellent, and there's myriad safety features that can be turned on or off. If there's anything to complain about it's that the 14-ply tires and very stout/stiff suspension let you know when the roads really suck, and unfortunately many do. The ride did improve with the trailer hooked up which added around 1,000lb to the bed, but still, it's not a luxury sedan. Fuel mileage is what it is. A 9,500lb truck with a 4.30 rear end is never going to win any fuel efficiency competitions, but running empty at 70mph with a 48 gallon fuel tank gives a range of around 700 miles which is about as far as I want to go in a day.

At this point I have zero regrets buying the F-450, and now I want to find excuses to use it. Even though I bought it for towing, I would most likely use it for a road trip and try the "Economy" mode to see how that does, and keep the speed to around 75mph.

I'm going to look into adding an EGT gauge at some point, but given the amount of technology on the truck I'm sure that the computer would prevent excessive heat in the turbo. I would be interested to see what the EGTs are though. The DPF seems to stay at 0% when the speed is 60mph and up.

Here's a photo of the display I set up when towing the trailer.

Here's an example of the heads up display when in "Towing" mode. It shows engine rpm, current gear, current speed, speed limit, and cruise control active.

I sure do love road trips. There's something special about being on the road, driving a good vehicle, listening to music, taking in all the scenery and heading to the next destination. I'm already missing it.

oh my…That’s a great combination!

Have you loaded your orange monster on it yet?

Are those MAXX ramps? (If not they look similar I think you will like the deck over trailer and the MAXX ramps.). Those are nice ramps and it’s really helpful when you flip them and the properly engage the ground to minimize trailer lift when loading…that’s the way to go IMO.

Check out the safety wire and pins for the ramps, and next time at TSC or wherever, go ahead and pick up some extra…it’s a lot easier than you think to forget they are safety wired down🙄.

congratulations!

Guys....I think he's trying to tell us this F450 will be a better towing rig than the old F250.....😆😆😆
It's marginally better! 😂 The F-250 will be relegated to winter duty and general run around. I haven't decided if I'll tow the boat to my friend's place using the F-450 or F-250. I'll probably use the F-250 since it handles the boat very well, but if pulling the boat further afield I'll use the F-450.

I need to make one correction. I actually drove 3,529.6 miles and only 252 miles of that was traveling on the same stretch of road heading out and coming back. I bought 263.6 gallons of diesel with an average weighted cost of $3.51/gallon. The cheapest diesel was $3.06/gallon in Plankinton, SD and the most expensive was $4.11/gallon in Sheridan, WY but I might have messed up and unnecessarily opted for the most expensive option.
