Anyone have experience with the M4000?

We had to replace a tractor that blew up rather quickly, and went to look at an M4000 today.

It fired right up with the glow plugs and ran super smooth, shifted well in all gears too, and the power steering worked fine, we ended up buying it.

Are there any weak points or things to watch out for with these tractors? Most of it's duty is going to be moving round bales, running the post pounder, and running a small spreader, no loader on it.

The M4000 was a nice tractor. Almost 40 years old.The 6 cylinder engine purrs.The one weak spot was the spider gears in the rear end. They had brass bushing in them and would work there way out. I would check the hydraulic filter on the right side , and see what is in it. The other thing to remember is the PTO has its own clutch handed.Be sure when not using the PTO, take it out of gear and leave the handle down so the throughout bearing is not turning all the time.How many hours does it have on it.

It was showing 2000 hours, pretty clean for it's age.

I was curious about the PTO clutch, that's kind of an interesting feature.

I found the manual for it, and it's a bit confusing. It is showing that the down position is Engaged, and the up and locked position is Disengaged, it then says to keep the lever in the horizontal position (engaged) and to only use the lever for connecting and disconnecting implements. I assume it's a safety feature.

So if I'm to understand it, they want you to keep the PTO clutch engaged unless you are changing implements, then you disengage it for safety?

On that model you keep it engaged because keeping it in the disengaged causes the throw out bearing for the PTO clutch to keep running on the clutch fingers causing heavy wear, it would be like riding the clutch pedal all the time. ;)

Thanks guys, it makes sense like that.

We got it home on Saturday and I went up there and put it through it's paces. What a fantastic little tractor. The 6 cylinder is so much smoother than the 4 cylinder Ford he had.

It makes awesome power, and the gearing versatility with the high/low and creep lever should keep him from over working it.

The hour meter still works, and it's showing 2000. No smoke other than black when you first throttle up, even under load.

I think it will have a very good service life ahead of it yet.
