I've got about 1,000' of shallow 'trench' to dig for some lawn edging. Needs to be 8" deep, but only a couple inches wide. Thinking of having a plate of steel made up that will bolt into place instead of one of the BH bucket teeth and have a 1/4 twist to it so when I draw it towards me it slices into the soil, plowing it to one side only and leave a nice clean edge on the other.
Think it'll work? Anyone do anything similar with success?
Should I be approaching this differently?

I needed to do something much the same......drawback with using the hoe, you have to move and reset all the time. I saw somewhere a guy taking a steel flat bar, securing it to the front bucket with straps and digging a light trench that way......

not sure I like the angle iron......but if the ground is "soft" it might be a way to go

this is the ticket, but requires $$$$$

let us know what you come up with!

Not sure, but i wouldn't have posted it. Looks like a good way to lose an eye.

I kind of forced into using the BH as it's over very uneven ground, slopes, lots of curves etc. Simply won't be able to keep the tractor level enough to use something off of the TPH or FEL.

eldubya,

We recently used a one bottom plow to go 100 feet in about 15 minutes. Going forward is stable and even with rocks, a back up and re-pull took them all out.

On occasions, we have used a single tine ripper also but the one bottom has more weight. Prior to this, we trenched 300 feet with the one bottom and it took about 20 minutes.

I did see a fellow use his bucket once to trench using a fence post attached to the front of the bucket on two sides. I don't know how his ground was but he did make good progress with that setup.

Figured it out! Don't know why I didn't think of this before.
Am going to take one of the scarifier teeth off of my box blade, mount it with two holes drilled into the side of the BH bucket and Viola! The tooth already has holes in it so I can adjust the length if need be. Should work great I hope.

Sounds like a great idea, would like to see pics when you get it built.

See the website www.Bro-Tec.Biz. Richard's got a single trenching tooth for the backhoe just like you describe. And a similar plow-like furrowing attachment to add to it.

I may not have the website name correct--search for Bro-Tec and should find it.

Please post back your experiences with box blade tooth bolted to BH bucket so we may all learn.

When you are digging with your back hoe, the relief valves limit the pressure to the cylinders. When you are dragging something through the ground, your pressure limit is the strength of the hoses, cylinders and valve O-rings. I once had the bucket resting in the hole and drove the tractor away. The digger stick cylinder was extended, and bent its shaft into a lazy J shape!! Years ago I built something that bolted in place of my rear blade, and it worked fine.

Yes, and it works to give a clean edge. Took a piece of plate steel and bolted it on to where the teeth holes are (removing the teeth of course first) flust to the back (outside) of the bucket and had it set down proud of the the front edge of the bucket. I had bent it by accident while hitting a hugh rock in the first few minutes of using it but left as is and worked to make a real nice clean trench line for a irrigration line.

Cheers, some accidential designs do work.

Got the holes drilled and fang mounted. Did a test dig and it works great! Digs a nice straight line, although doesn`t clear the soil out of the trench very well. Cuts through a 4`tree root like it`s butter![IMGhttps://picasaweb.google.com/116265927137069782659/KubotaFang?authkey=Gv1sRgCKP8-6yirtu3vgE#6032372630955681298[/IMG]

Looks good, glad to hear it worked. I'll file that away for future reference.
