Anybody buy and install their own mid-mount mower deck?

I haven’t. The MMM was mounted to my B2601. I did have to adjust it a fair bit, since it wasn’t set up correctly. I’ve had it off and on a couple times. If you can find the pdf operators manual for the MMM, it has all of the mounting directions in it. That may help you appreciate what you’re getting in to.

It shouldn’t be too bad to install if you buy the correct mowing deck for your tractor. No different than the continual on/off process you’re going to have to get used to with a mmm.
I bought a pre-owned but nearly unused 72" deck for my B3350 a year or so after buying the tractor simply because it was such a good deal and used MMMs are difficult to find. Installed and set it up myself then removed and stored. Still haven't used it.
Comprehensive installation and set-up instructions are in the mower (not tractor) Operator's Manual.
If you follow the instructions precisely and do not take short-cuts, things will work out as intended.
A level, concrete floor is just about mandatory for proper set-up.

My big fear is i have to travel a ways to get the deck and i want to make sure I do not need anything else for the install.

Valid concern.
There are many brackets, etc., necessary, all of which are expensive if bought separately.
