I don’t want to hijack the current thread on side by sides. I am looking at the General 1000 EPS Premium. It’s half work horse and half fun toy. Still has good capacities, Tow hitch and dump bed, but I want to drive to town and all around, so pavement comfort, along with hard top, doors, heater etc are all on the list. In the Free state of Idaho a $10. License plate makes any off road toy street drivable.
Does any one have one of the Generals? I know a few folks with other polaris’s That do the same, and beat them to death, and they mostly hold up( till they go on their roofs, etc) I understand you can destroy anything. I’ve had a Polaris 800 and Rhino 660, but they are like a model A car compared to a modern vehicle anymore. I plan on putting lots of road and fire road trail miles on it, and using it around the ranch hauling some wood, etc, but more driving than working for sure.
The prices are sure up there, but I will get lots of use out of it. Any opinions? Polaris owners?

My next sxs will be a general! Like you said, half work, half play. A buddy on my hunting lease has one and it is awesome!!! They are all pricy but, if you are will to travel, you can run across some pretty good deals.

I have a Ranger after having a RzR, when I upgrade it will be a General. My old neighbor has the General and it would be perfect for a combo work/play utility vehicle. Pick it up and let us know.

I’ve had my General for a bit over a year. I really like it, and haven’t had any problems. Fit and finish is ok, a few squeaks and rattles but nothing too bad. The ride, comfort, and power are great!

I'm also looking at a general. I currently have a Ranger 800XP and it has been a reliable workhorse!

Only reason I'm looking at a general, is I want something I can play with, as well as work with. (Now that I'm retired).

I am really impressed with the suspension and travel the general has. I know any NEW side by side is miles ahead of the older rigs I have gotten used to. I also like the solid doors, and availability of hard top, windshield etc to seal it up and use all winter. I also still like quads, but for running long distances, especially pavement driving, I like the steering wheel and upright seating, and cup holder, radio, heater, windshield,etc.... hahaha. Like they say “With age, comes a cage”......

I have a 17 General with about 2000 miles on it now. The 16 and 17 models were hampered by several issues like driveline problems, bad door latches, steering defects and things of that nature. The above issues have been resolved for 2018 with better doors and hardware, recalls on the steering coming loose, and driveline changes. They needed to change the complete driveline from front to rear on my General due to rattling and excessive noise. The replaced the shafts, upgraded the joints to CV type, and replaced the Center Bearing as well. It was no simple task mind you to have Polaris come good on their Warranty, but was finally able to get them to co-operate after I posted a video of the issue on YouTube.

Other than that, it is a great machine. Stupid powerful. The ride is unequaled in my opinion, and I have had a lot of SXS's. With all the little issues I had, I still love my General and plan on keeping this one until the wheels fall off. I am also posting the link to my video of the driveline issues in this post if you are interested.

I am very interested in the video, information is always a good thing. Thank you. Do you drive any pavement? I know I would have to also get a set of DOT tires mounted to drive to town and to a lot of the trail heads. My older 800 was pretty fast? I agree the newer 1000 EFI’s have got to be stupid fast! And I’m just stupid enough to drive it fast!

Yes, it is actually scary fast. 99% of our riding is on trails, and abandoned rail beds converted into multi use trails. I dont do much pavement riding as it is illegal up here. You can only ride on pavement 500 feet or less to access trails, and thats IF it is designated as ATV Access Route. We usually ride between 10 and 15 MPH most of the time, but I've had her up over 80 before. It's not necessarily the top speed that impressive, but how quickly it get there.

Once it’s registered, ($10.) you can drive on any road except the interstate here. I regularly see family’s going to breakfast, drive to the store, gas station, etc in their SxS’s. That’s why I like the windshield and hardtop idea

They look like a great machine. I checked them out at my dealer. I’d really like one to boogie around and use for hauling tree stands and deer. I just can’t get over the price tag, especially when my 2010 sportsman 850 xp serves me well with it’s little dump trailer for the amount of hours it actually sees every year.

Coming from Ontario, now living in NB, I find it's a shame about not being able to ride the roads. Even back roads would be good. Oh well, maybe some day.

Where did you buy yours? I'm near the Moncton area but Polaris dealers seem to be a bit limited...

There is definitely not a “selection” of Generals anywhere around me. I will probably travel to a large Polaris dealer in the big cities to at least look at some options.

What do you guys think of a REAL glass ( safety glass) windshield over a Lexan windshield. I’m worried with a wiper kit, the lexan will show lots of scratches after some use. It may be Bullet proof as to flying rocks, but I had the original windshield in my 72 Bronco for 40+ years with just two small rock chips

I'm in the Edmundston area. Bought the machine in Maine. Why pay $26k for something when you can get it for $17K ??

I have a 900 I drive primarily on-road as we can drive these as licensed vehicles here in AZ. A few thoughts.

I have glass front and rear. Wouldn't even consider plexi if glass was an option. My glass cleans up like new and has no scratches after two years.

OEM tires are not what you want for pavement. After 1000mi, I sold my set to a guy looking for new tires for his 800 and put Kanati Mongrels on mine. HUGE difference in both control. noise, and vibration. Its like a car with a high-pitched tread whine now and it handles great. The Mongrel has huge treads and are a highway compounded radial which will last far longer than the OEM lugs did.

One thing I like about my bench seat is that you can seat three up front comfortably. Plus you have under-seat storage. Can you do that with the General? Would a 1000 Ranger be a better choice for round-town? Your call. Not sure what their line-up offers today. Sounds like you had that configuration in the 800.

Good luck and have fun.

(This pic is with the OEM tires)
