New to the site so this topic has more then likely been hashed over several times. I just picked up a L-275 that I'm told is an 1984ish, the tractor hadn't been run in years, the oil was over full but when drained it didn't show any signs of water in it. Put in fresh and filter new fuel and topped of the radiator ( took about a gallon) Ran the tractor for about an hour and it started over heating waited about half an hour and started pouring in more antifreeze, pulled the oil dipstick and milky oil just started pouring out, end of story. My question is what is going on? no white smoke was coming out the exhaust so I'm guessing not a head gasket, maybe cracked block? looking for ideas, thanks.

My first guess is that the head or block is cracked somewhere likely from freezing and thawing.
I hear that the weather in Montana can be chilly!
That engine install looks very easy to work on and pulling off the head looks straight forward enough.
If you haven't, you will want to drain all the oil now to remove the water out of the crankcase and then refill with oil - old oil if you have any just to have oil around internals.
Let's see what others think...

No personal experience but the parts pages show a 010 sealing cap in the front end of the block inside the gearcase. If it has pushed out of position it looks like coolant could mix with the oil ?

I don't know that engine but is it possible for the water to get from the water pump into the crankcase?
remove the valve cover and inspect the freeze plugs in the top of the head, down in between the valve pairs. I've seen them get loose, and I've seen them 'out' and I've also seen them rust from lack of cooling system maintenance.
Beyond that, there may be another plug in behind the water pump but I don't remember it specifically.
Then head gasket, but generally speaking a leaky head gasket will show up as bubbling in the radiator (with the cap removed). Remove cap on a cold engine, fill it with coolant (or water if you please), start the engine and watch for bubbles. I did this one time and it was not bubbles as it was a geyser! So don't stand over it....
if not a gasket, almost has to be a big break in a cylinder or maybe head.

Prior owner probably found out same issue. Drained milky mix out and refilled with oil, and didn't put water in the radiator. The pushed out expansion/freeze plug/welch plug behind the timing cover is my guess outside of the head plugs like lugbolt mentioned.
I have a mower at my house waiting for the same fix. Many heads are lifted for no reason due to this issue.

you guys are very help full, thanks. I'm thinking i might try and give this tractor new life. all off the reply's are easy enough to give a go with out being into it for to much money.
Cylinder Head internal freeze plug
Anyone have any experience with a freeze plug under the valve cover popping? No other plugs are affected. question is pull the head or JB weld the plug inplace and carry on?
