New to the forum and recently purchased (new to me) L4850 (early 1990s model with under 1000 hours). Operators Manual says to use 10w-30w w/ API/SAE service CC or CD (basically for diesel engines). Understand the CC - CD specification is now obsolete and replaced with CF, CG-4, CH-4, or CI-4. Seems you can find 15-40w with these diesel specifications (which I use in my diesel pickup), but not sure where to find 10w-30 diesel oil? Not particular on brand, just the correct API/SAE specification.

Searched on the forum and didn't find this discussed. Does anyone know where to buy? Hopefully you don't have to buy from a dealer as there is not one close.

I have several cases of regular 5w-30 Pennzoil that I no longer have a vehicle to use in -- so was hoping to use that in the tractor -- but after research that sounds like a bad idea. Thanks for your help

I use 15-40 from the Kubota dealer. I believe they have 10-30 also.

But since no dealer close, see if there's any Rottila locally.

Don't use the Penzoil in your tractor- it isn't formulated to suspend the soot that gets in the oil. You definitely want diesel-rated oil.
I use 15W-40 Rotella in my B7100 with no issues. I don't want to steer you wrong, and it is you choice, but many folks here don't use the weight called for, because of a couple of reasons. One, oil has come a ways since some tractors were built, and there are different standards now. Two, Different climates call for different weights, so 10W-30 might not be the only thing you can use in your tractor. Three, a zillion hours of collective operation with no apparent side effects proves to me that I am safe with 15W-40.
You might want to talk with your dealer, and see what they say. I think that you have options.
Also, did you ask the previous owner what was used in the tractor?

Personally I use 5w30 synthetic diesel oil in all my equipment and trucks. About the only down fall to using 15w40 is it will hurt your fuel economy just a little and will be harder to start when it's cold.

Hodge - I purchased the tractor from a dealer and they called the previous owner to ask if I might call them. Unfortunately, the previous owner was having some medical problems and the family didn’t want to be bothered … so don’t know how to find out what oil the previous owner was using. Using 15w-40 (which I use in my diesel pickup) makes sense and is readily available anywhere … I may go that route since it is priced reasonable as well (especially at O’Reilly’s – thanks Ismurphy). Thanks.

Bulldog – where do you get the synthetic 5w-30 diesel oil? Is that sold in most auto stores or perhaps Walmart or do you purchase from a dealer? I have seen 5w-40 synthetic on shelves but not the 5w-30 (or perhaps I just wasn’t paying attention).

Fuel filter, oil filter, and hydraulic filter … where do you all get those? On-line someplace or through a dealer? I have a lot to learn …

If I were you, I would use synthetic Rotella T6 5w40. It will handle your SD Winters just fine and also your Summers. Seeing as how you have a 20 something year old tractor, keep an eye on the oil level no matter which oil you decide on. The fact that the Rotella is a synthetic has no affect on oil usage or leakage as it may have been when synthetics were first introduced. They fixed that a long time ago.
It's what I use year round in my tractor and 2000 Jeep Cherokee and apparently many folks on this and other tractor forums have decided to use it too. In truth, whatever diesel oil you decide to use will probably work fine as long as you change it when you are supposed to.

I get all my Kubota filters from my Kubota dealer.
But you can check O’Reilly’s for Wix filters. They are good quality!

After reading too many oil threads in the last couple years. I think I may switch to 5-30 or 5-40 synthetic. Would that weight be good in southern Missouri? We get very hot is summer 90-100f and very cold in winter, down to -10. But I would not use the tractor much below 20f.

I use Amsoil synthetics products. I became a dealer just for my own benefit and I order for friends when they want something. Amsoil was the first company to introduce synthetic lubricants to the civilian market. IMHO they are the best lubricants on the market.

Filters: The ones I can cross over I buy from Amsoil. Most of the others I buy from a local fleet supplier call truck-pro. Most of the filters I get there are Donaldson, a few are Baldwin and anything I can't find a crossover filter I'll buy from Kubota.

For the most part on filters stay away from Fram, aside from that most any quality name brand filter should be fine. Yes, there is a difference in filter quality but for the most part all of them at least meet Kubota specs. I prefer filters that excees specs just for alittle extra piece of mind.

Bluegill, I use my L3000 about everyday no matter how hot or cold. A few winters back I started it a -11F without (not a habit) using glow plugs just to see how it would act. It started almost as good down that cold as it does in the summer. I really like the benefits of 5w30 synthetic oil.

Thanks Bulldog. I'll go to synthetic next change. I always felt 15-40 with not the best for winter use.

Just some feedback. I was able to find 10w-30 diesel oil (Rotella) synthetic blend at Walmart - $16.00 gallon. I've only looked and bought 15w-40 diesel oil prior so guess I just wasn't aware that if you looked a little harder they also had the 10w-30 diesel oil. Was able to get the oil, hydro/trany, and fuel filters at a Kubota dealer about 70 miles away. Also purchased some Kubota UDT hydro oil. Didn't change the hydro oil, but changed the filter (and cleaned the magnetic thing) and added about 8 quarts of fesh oil. Did not change the air filter, but checked and it was okay ... but will eventually change (those things are expensive!). Checked the front axle oil and at the proper level. All oils and filters in place and ready for some work.

Thanks for suggestions and help.
