I had seen on the nightly news over the 4th of July weekend there were over 500 shootings across the USA.
I've been buying some ammo now off and on when I see it online or in stores as its really scarce.
My question is where are all the 'shooters' (gangs) getting their ammo from ? Is there a ammo black market ?

Actually prices around here are coming down quite a bit. Small gunshops seem to have plenty.
As far as where/how gangs are getting theirs, it's probably illegal.

absolutely getting theirs on the black market. In some places that's the only source, period. There has been "some" around here but it's few, far between, and nothing that I would consider a "common" caliber. See some .257 Roberts once in a while, 25-06, etc. You get the idea.

There have been things done, and things said that led up to a huge run of ammo purchases by many. For instance I know a guy who hoards. He has over a million rounds of .22LR but doesn't own a .22 rifle of any kind. Keep saying someday people will want it and pay, meaning he's got a bunch of rounds that he plans on making money on. So that begs the question, who's he gonna sell to? Folks that might use some of it for the wrong reasons, or squirrel hunters? How many hoarders are buying to resell? How many are making good money doing it? Where are they (re)selling at?

Sam at SGA and "Angela" at Luckygunner sell ammo on line every day.

It is not immoral , illegal or unlawful to sell, purchase or posses fire arm ammunition with proper credentials.

The unlawful don't care about these trivialities. ;-)

Ammo is slowly starting to hit the shelves here. Still waiting for prices to drop more. Reloading supplies still aren't on the shelves and I haven't found primers anywhere.

Actually, you don't need any credentials to buy and sell ammo. You need them to "manufacture" ammo which basically means if you reload and sell the ammo then you need credentials. Probably because it would be expected that you have insurance for an accidental hot round or the like. However, if you are just buying Federal ammo and reselling it at a markup no credentials required.

Also I am of the mindset with ammo to buy what you need and leave what you don't. For example I keep a stock of like 600 12 GA birdshot because it isn't hard to run through 300 rounds in a weekend shooting clays (or shooting at real birds). So I was in Walmart and there were like 400 rounds on the shelf and no limit. I could have easily walked out with all of them but I only needed 100 so I got 100 and left it for the next person who might need a couple hundred themselves. This run on the market is ridiculous and perpetuated by 2 types of people, scalpers and hysterics. I can't stand either. The only reason to buy all of the ammo off the shelf is because there are only 2 boxes of ammo left on that shelf. If you don't already I suggest to set yourself a mental min/max for how much of each caliber you need and just maintain that level so you don't have to buy .22 ammo at 15 cpr.

That makes two of us. I'm down to my last brick of both large and small pistol. I hope they start showing up soon.

I was in BassPro in Dallas, TX last week and they were pretty stocked on all ammo. However they were still trying to sell Winchester green tip junk for almost $1 a round….kick rocks.

They’re all going into production of complete rounds.

Every company is producing record volumes, but the demand is even larger.

It takes lots of time and money to scale up production, smaller manufacturers are stepping in (or starting up) to meet demand, but I don’t think bulk primers are going to be readily and consistently available soon. The tooling for them is pretty highly specialized.

Wally World took a political stance, and said they are no longer going to sell “Short Barrel Rifle” ammunition-whatever that is supposed to mean.

What it seems to mean is selling nothing but hunting ammo, and not much of that.

5.56/223, 7.62x39, 7.62x51 ball, 9MM, .40, .45, are all off the list now. I don’t know about .22, .308 soft point is still around (I hear).

I don’t expect to buy any ammunition in WM again. In fact I’ve cut my spend there down to nearly nothing.

They’re getting it the same way they get their guns-mostly theft.

More power to your hoarding friend-nothing illegal, nefarious, or immoral about it.

I think he’s misguided, and likely to loose his A** on his “investment”, but whatever.

It’s not like ammunition is perishable, it’s not a head of lettuce, properly stored it’s not going bad in his lifetime.

Please don’t buy into the narrative that a guy with a 6 rifles, and 5K rounds has an “arsenal” and is somehow a danger to the community. 99.9999% of the time he’s not.

Around here Walmart doesn't have any, Cabela's didn't have much but the small stores are getting more in. Still harder to find older stuff like .300 Sav.

Haven't really looked around here. I don't shoot much, so a box of bird shot, a dozen rounds of 00 buckshot, and I'm good to go on the 12 gauge. Wouldn't mind if Winchester 32-20 was a little more readily available, or .22 Magnum A couple hundred rounds of 8mm Mauser would make me a bit happier too.

Nothing available around here. Cabelas gets 1-2 pallets every Tuesday, but there is a bunch of people lined up at the door every ammo day, and the first two usually buy up everything.
