They don't need to fatten up very much, when the grains push into each other, as seen in a post below yours, that is overripe.

Yep! Those were ready to pick. I meant the rest need to fatten up. They are not coming all at once. The others will have a small space between the rows. Many still have green silks.

Question....If some have brown silks but are skinny ears will they fatten up if I leave them be or are they pretty much done growing at that point?

You would be coming in the home stretch when silk is brown. The best time is in the milk stage when a milky juice comes out of a pinched kernel, that can happen with little brown to totally brown, depending on type of corn or the weather. Keep a close watch and if it goes a day without expanding, better get it picked. When you pick have everything ready to process so that it can be canned, eaten or frozen immediately, you don’t want supermarket corn. I no longer have a garden, age is catching up, but when I did the wife would ask me to pick corn for a meal and I would ask if the water was boiling yet.

When to the local farm today, the corn was $5 for 6 or $10 for 12

I love how they "give you a deal" with $10 for 12. Wait...they just doubled $5 for 6. I'll save even more by getting $15 for 18!!!

LOL,, I think back to when Aunt Audrey and us would load up the pick up and drive off to the then new housing developments. We sold a dozen for 75 cents,, and then slip a small ear or 2 in the bunch,,, and those old woman would say, ohh you are such a sweet boy here is a tip for you. I never had the heart to tell them the stuff we took back would go to the live stock anyways.

A couple of local farms here feature butter n sugar. I always buy a dozen - even if its just for my wife n I. In two days its gone, I cook it all the first day and eat it cold the second.
