Am I nuts or is my coworker an idiot. Which I already think. I was gonna use my new to me l3000dt to put in a new 2 acre pumpkin patch for a guy who I already do 40 acres hay for with the big tractor. I was gonna plow and then till or disc. Is this too much for the little 3000?? It's just so much easier to haul and it's fun to play with the new "baby". Appreciate your responses

For 2 acres, I would use the L3000. That's not very much at all. That tractor will have that done and not even break a sweat!

Don't know what kind of disc or plow you have but more than likely either would be faster than a tiller. Might even disc or plow then till just to save time but the tractor should be up to the task no matter what. I have a old 10' IH trail type disc I pull with my L3000 and it handles it with no problem. That model may be basic but it's a little work horse.
2 bottom plow and 6' angled disc. The tiller is a king kutter gear drive 60". I figured it would be up to the task. Just figured I'd ask some opinions on the matter.

Make sure the soil is right for plowing/discing but I know you got that down pat!
Your set up should work just fine. The plan of plow, disc, rototill is the first class way to do the job. The guy must be a good friend since the work will take extra time...especially if you have to haul it all to the job and back.
If it is virgin ground then the plow is likely a good idea for the initial break-up. Discs sometimes require several passes if the area used to be permanent pasture or the like.
A tiller on new ground can leap around a bit and shake the heck out of the tractor. Once the ground is disturbed the tiller can zip through fairly quickly...but two acres will still take a while.
You will have to make the call on what tasks are necessary depending on the ground conditions.

He is and refuses to buy a Kubota. Even though he's in the market for a 50 hp hst loader tractor and hates hearing everyone telling him the best one is an orange one. It's ok he can buy a green yanmar for $15000 more and get less tractor.He must be one of them thar green guys,,,,

Plow if it's hard packed or very weed packed, disk if you have serrated / Trash blades otherwise just rototill.
If you want a good smooth seed ready surface you need to spike harrow it down when your done.

I've planted pumpkins in the past on virgin ground and I just plowed it, then hit it with the tiller. Disking then tilling seems like overkill to me.
A harrow seems like overkill too, it doesn't have to be perfectly groomed to plant pumpkins.
The only part I didn't care for with growing them is that its almost impossible to keep the weeds from growing all around them.
I have winter wheat growing right now. I think that I'm going to plant pumpkins and gourds thought out the wheat. I just broadcast the seed so it doesn't look as pretty as the fields where the farmers drilled it but it did come up alright, I just have bare spots here and there.

I was a "green" guy when I first got into the market for a new tractor. That was before I did a little research. NO going back now!
Sounds like one of those guys that buy a deere just because their dad had one years ago. Now days it's nothing more than a color, quality has gone down the pipes.

Your not lying. I have an old drill and looking for a 71 model flex planter with fert boxes. But he wags $44000 in a 57 hp tractor with loader and jd green woods base model 6' cutter. Ridiculous I work too hard to waste my cash on a color. I want quality , good service and parts availability and a well built product. I have only one Kubota but it suprises me every time I use the little booger
