I just bought a 1979 B6100e, I put a brand new battery on it and it fired right up. I came out the next morning and the battery was dead. Charged it and as it was hooked up the water pump assembly started smoking. So I disconnected the battery. I don’t see any bare wires and am wondering if my regulator is bad? I don’t know much about these tractors and this is my first tractor. Any thoughts?

Is the battery ground wire attached to the water pump?

Well, I'd sure like to see a picture of that water pump assy.

First, you will need a copy of a Workshop Manual (WSM) to get an electrical diagram(s). It is going require circuit isolating by disconnecting certain connectors or ring lugs. A DC clipon ammeter will be needed. If there is stray current flowing, it will have to be isolated and identified. It is also possible that something got miswired somewhere down the road.
