alternator upgrade?

I have a 12,000 HF winch I bought for my truck but never installed. I'm thinking of mounting to my L3750. Running it, I imagine, will drain down the battery pretty good, so I'm wondering if anyone has done an electrical/alternator upgrade for more juice?

A good battery and you should be good they put winches on atv's all the time. I believe you have a 35 watt alternator on your l3750.

Up the battery size and load rating and you should be fine, unless your going to be using a whole lot and constantly to do jobs.

The real plus to a diesel is it uses little to no electrical power to operate the engine, so the recovery from the average alternator is quicker than a gas vehicle.

Imagine an atv with a 10 or 15 amp generator and the winching that may be necessary at times. We used a quad/winch setup for skidding wood winching out of tough spots. We upgraded battery to double size of atv battery. It worked well.

A 12000 lb winch would be overkill, but it will do everything you ask of it and then some. So a 35 amp alternator should not be much of an issue unless you are trying to pull tractor up into a tree.i saw a photo of one in a tree, in a friends photo album,loggers are crazy.

I would at a minimum increase battery size and suggest using a battery charger after a day of heavy use.

I put a winch on my trailer and used a deep cycle marine battery. It has really held up well. Even doing multiple pulls in a row like pulling a car out from spots just to be able to load the recovery on the battery has never been a problem. Only thing that charges mine is the hot wire on the 7 point plug.

Like others have said, the alternator is there as a constant source of power to help run the electrical on a typical engine, however the battery has far more "juice" than any alternator. A marine battery can be drained over time better then a standard car battery, so to a golf cart battery. Batteries are not batteries. YOU need a battery that can handle the load of the winch, and then if discharged, can be be slowly brought back up to speed. If you really need that large of a winch, then I would have an aux battery than can be used JUST for that application, (not sure where you could/would place it) but separate from the engine battery - I find these chargers to be excellent and can be plugged in all the time with ZERO ill effects. I have two of these, always hooked up to either my kubota's or batteries sitting on the table. IMO - worth there weight in gold!

That winch has a 5% duty cycle, so you can winch like 45 seconds and then you're supposed to stop and wait approx 15 minutes to let the motor cool down. If followed, you won't have any battery problems to worry about. Use the factory battery but you'll have to figure out how to do the cables; because the HF winch will use a LOT of juice, therefore it has big cables-that don't just attach directly to the tractor's factory battery connections. I think that's gonna be the toughest part. And don't skimp there either. Could lead to fire. I have an appointment coming next week, guy installed his own HF winch on an ATV, said wire shorted and burned the ATV. Wants me to see if it's salvageable. Don't sound good to me at all.

There is no fuse or breaker on the winch wiring; so keep that in mind. I think there should be, though.

I use a resettable circuit breaker,to a second battery in my truck. Connected is the plow pump and winch. 150 amp if i recall.

Thanks fellas. Good stuff all around here. I bought a new battery in August when I got the tractor, so I don't want to upgrade that just yet. When the winch is on I'll run it 45 on 15 off as mentioned. I guess my next step is figuring the wiring and breaker situation. I'll post back as I go ...
