OK, the one grand Daughter bought me one of those Amazon Alexia things, OK its cool any kind of music I want news weather cool. NOW this thing has started to come on at all odd hours, even when Im not home. And it is somewhat disconcerting, when you hear voices in the kitchen and you are the only one home! And you sneak your old arse outa bed and pick up a boom stick on the way to the kitchen, only to find this box just doing its thing. And it could be the last 60s station I had played or the news or weather, which I did not previously play, or this morning at 0400, AM Coast to coast !
Anyone have a logical explanation or is it haunted like them damned Furbies???

I suspect the unit is defective if you can't turn it off. Have your granddaughter arrange an exchange

Maybe meant ‘broom handle’….those are very collectible, but I think much better EDC options would be available than using the collectible.

Best guesses:

1. You are talking in your sleep and it complies.
2. It interprets your snoring as commands.
3. It is haunted.

It completely eludes me why anyone would willingly plant an eavesdropper in their house.

SOP for Alexa, it's learning from YOU what to do and say....that is WHAT it was programmed to do

just say 'I need a late night hook up' about 234 times and see who knocks on your door !!!

better yet, empty 3-4 tight rounds at it THEN 'return to sender', after explaining to the cops you thought as armed burgler was in your living room....

Sounds like one or more routines are active. Open the Alexa app, tap the hamburger menu > Settings, and tap Routines. Disable the Routine that plays music on Alexa. Disabling the routine should stop Alexa from playing songs automatically.
I would disable all of them you see.

If you did a packet capture/ trace on your phone overnight, you would put a few in it also. All your apps report back in the middle of the night.

He did say "boom stick", which I took to mean 12ga.

I'll go with haunted like a Furby.

I wouldn't own one of those things. Had one answer me with a bizarre response when I was away on vacation and it was in a hotel room (part of the digital clock radio--never knew it was there.)

Plop--unplug !

Oh man the those Furby things are absolutely freaky. So quick story time since you brought it up.

At 32 years young, I was a kid when they got popular. I didn't like them but having sisters of course they made it into the house. I remember they were so excited to get one. Well fast forward a week or two and the constant noises in the middle of the night drove me nuts. Eventually the batteries died, they got bored of it and it landed in the bottom of a box in the back of a closet for a decade. All those years later that thing somehow came back to life on its own to scare the absolute crap out of my now grown sisters. How it managed to come back to life with batteries that have been dead for 10 years is beyond me. To the trash it went.

Fast forward to last year, I'm now married and my wife is younger than me. Not by much, but just enough to have missrd the boat with those damn devil creatures. She was at a garage sale and found one. I told her I didn't want it in my house. I tried to warn her that they aren't cute like she thinks and are literally posessed by the devil. After spending 2 hours listening to her whining I caved. That night we heard some of the most blood curdling noises I've ever experienced. Only to discover that Furby had come back to life. The wife was visibly shaken when we figured out the source. Because not only was the little bastard turned off, it didn't even have batteries in it. She ran it out to the garage and took my sledgehammer to it before throwing it in the trash...

In the end I guess she got what she wanted. She got to experience what Furby ownership was like.

I had an app that had bug allowing advertisements to mimic the home screen on my phone.

Wife and I awoke to voices coming from the living room in the middle of the night 😱😱😱😱

Well, I scolded the German shepherd for letting creepers in the house, grabbed the pistol and went to inspect.

The shepherd barely lifted her head.

Got.out in the living room and realized the voices were coming from my phone 🤬🤬🤬

Had to factory default my phone to get rid of the adds. Didn't download that app again either 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Alexa, be damed. (sic)

No way in hell I'd have a listening device in my home. Gift or not.

My kids (all adults) bring up this crap from time to time. I shut them down. Crotchety old man here. And I like it that way.

My sons are just the opposite. They all warned me never to bring these types of vulnerabilities onto my network.
For my outdoor cameras I put restrictions on the lan software so they couldn't 'call home'. No internet access for them.

It's kinda 'funny' that most are dead set against the 'guv' from spying on them BUT allow everyone else to using APPs on phones and Alexa devices.

Jay I worked for the gubermint, 38 years in enforcement. If they were interested in anything Im doing now they would know, I am a very uninteresting person.
And yeah it was a BROOM STICK yeah thats it a broom stick.
And all the techno stuff you guys talked about, like Shultz said,, I know nothing.
And really I dont have a cell phone, much to the dismay of the kids,, Well I did have one but the battery's went south, so did the phone, all the stuff in them really messes up the guts of the phone.
