Air filter clogged with snow

I ran into this issue with my air filter getting snow in it and then turning to ice. Should off took a couple of pics. But the pretty much looked like the others. I just got the covers from David and could not be happier. Not only is the tractor staying warmer but no snow is getting in the filter. And they fit like a factory part. Love them. Also David send some great info on them and like he said above on watching the temp gage as the weather warms up. Great post on this issue. Thanks

And that relocation will not affect any warranty issues down the road? I do not think I want to do any mods till I am past my warranty. And it may not but If I did a mod I guess I could go talk to my dealer first I guess.

It's a 40 year old tractor so no warranty.

Can you not simply pop that "snorkle tube" off when blowing snow?
In this way, the engine is breathing air AFTER it came thru the radiator and has some heat in it.

I considered buying a nice custom winter jacket like the member here makes for units like my B2650, as I had issues with both low winter engine temps and snowpack in the air intake the first winter.

Didn't spring $ for the nice tractor coat, but tempted.

Did this instead. Requires:

- Tin snips. Scissors.
- A few inches good tape. I use aluminum duct seal tape. Stays put, won't dry out, and removeable.
- A piece of house wrap the size of the rad screen. Tyvek or whatever.

Cut hole in tyvek about 2" x 10" or 12" in size and tape edges at a few places on outside (front) face of rad screen. Gives me a 1 bar jump on temp level indicator.


I dealt with the snow/ice-fog air ingress by tucking the intake inside and below the rad lip.
Winter mode:

Doing that solved the ice clogging issue but I was concerned about restricting the flow so got out the tin snips and made flaps to allow better winter mode flow.

Summer mode:


I used both red and green-handled ("right" and "left" handed) snips to keep the plastic cuts and bends clean.

Cost me 20 minutes of my time. Then 15 minutes every late fall replacing the rad cover after that.

Just re relocate it if there is a possibility of an issue.

I have had this problem twice now. New filters on the way to have on hand. Not only was there snow on the filters but also acorns inside filter compartment. Knowing this is a common problem helps when the black smoke starts rolling.

I tuck the open end of the engine air intake tube just inside the engine compartment every pre-winter tractor tuneup.
That has completely stopped all winter snow/ice buildup in the air filter canister for 3 years now.
To keep the rodents out some kind of 1/4x1/4" metal mesh cover might work.
I also cut made 2 little openings/tabs to ease air flow in winter mode.
