Hi, I'm looking to purchase a tractor for my 10 acre home. I came across a M4000 with a FEL that looks like a pretty good deal. However talked to the owner and it appears that the PTO may not be working. He said that he's owned the tractor for 7 years and used mainly to move hay so he's never used the PTO in that time. He said that he had other larger tractors for equipment so it was not needed.

I did some searching on the M4000 and can't hardly find any information regarding this model. That made me wonder about parts availablity and prices.

Any opinions on this tractor? Is it similar to a more common tractor that I would be able to find more information on or should I just avoid this model?

Welcome to the OTT forum Bob.

You can get new parts from Messicks or Coleman Equipment.

Is the previous owner telling you that the PTO does not work because he tested it or that he does not know because he never used it? Did you try to turn the PTO on?

Good, it's a kubota
Bad, it's a very old and obsolete kubota, parts for these very early model Kubota's are getting harder and harder to find.
Kubota has supported there older tractors for years, but available parts are either gone or getting very close to gone, with not much chance of them going back into production.

If you don't have knowledge in the repair and upkeep on these older model, I would avoid that model as it could eat you alive in repair and maintenance bills.

I think I saw that tractor for sale not too far from me. If I remember correctly it's 2 wheel drive. Just be aware of the limitations that presents.

D2Cat, it would be fairly close to you. I assume it's 2wd but I don't think that would be a concern for me. Just looked like a nice tractor and I've heard nothing but good things about Kubota, just didn't realize it would be as old as it is. Also so hard to find info on this model. I even found a list of past Kubota models on their site and the M4000 wasn't even on the list.

Mickeyd, I haven't seen the tractor yet, just going from what the owner told me. From reading some discussion about turning on the PTO for this tractor I could see him missing a step if he never used it.
