Adding dynamo and regulator

Currently, I am in a project like I have never seen as it deals with a Kubota Z482 engine that has an attached generator which is not working and is unknown if it is in any condition to run in the future.
Apparently, the engine obtained 12 volt power from an external battery or power source but has no means to charge that battery. Hooking up the engine by jumper cables to an external battery will allow the engine to run until it drains the battery and shuts down.
I am attempting to fit the engine with a method to charge this external battery. This engine previously did not have an alternator or regulator, so this would be new installation. I have looked at a 1 wire GM alternator but the space is so limited, it appears it will not fit. A Kubota alternator (dynamo) has not been tried for space but appears it is the smallest unit that might fit. It appears this dynamo has 2 wires that attach to the regulator. In looking at regulators for units such as Kubota G4200, some of these regulators have 5 and some maybe 6 wires.
It looks like a 6 wire regulator uses B to go to the battery, L to charge light, I to ignition, and N to “N” in dynamo–F to dynamo field–E to dynamo. But the dynamo only has 2 wires??
This engine starts by pressing a rocker switch to engage the starter, maybe “I” goes to this wire?
An assortment of dynamos and regulators are available, thus would it make any difference is which on is purchased?

See if the DELCO CS-130 series alternator will fit, DENSO make them as well.
I've used them a lot...every tractor(6-7?) here has one, freebie junkyard units.
You probably only need a 30-40A unit..NOT 80-100 !

Dynamo and alternators are 2 separate beasts.
An dynamo produces AC off of it's 2 outputs, there is no field or anything else.
An alternator can have an internal regulator or an external regulator

Like @GreensvilleJay said you could easily use this alternator.

And FYI it's a diesel engine, so it shouldn't need any power to run after it's started.
If it's draining a battery it sounds like your powering the glow plugs after it's started, or your powering a run solenoid wrong.

Diesel fuel shut off solenoids I've seen with a 'run' winding DO draw current in order to keep the engine running - Not as much current as the 'pull' winding, but still enough current to drain a battery after some number of hours...

Thanks for the info about the alternator. I need to determine exactly how much space is available around the hoses and such but don't believe there is very much room. In fact, that was the only reason to consider the dynamo.
Yes, it is a diesel but I can tell you first hand that once the 12 volt power is discontinued, it immediately shuts down. Don't know what all it powers but I can tell you for sure the 12 volt battery power provides power to the electric fuel pump. If you hook up a remote battery with jumper cables, start it, let it run then remove one of the battery cables, it dies right away. Guess no power to fuel pump means no fuel to engine.
I have been directed to a Kubota G4200 yard tractor that uses the 2 wire dynamo and a 4 wire voltage regulator. It appears the 2 sky blue wires from the dynamo connect with 2 sky blue wires on the voltage regulator. A black wire is ground and the remaining red wire connects and provides 12 volts to the battery. That seems simple enough. Guess I now need to determine how much space is available, order a support for the alternator or dynamo then measure to see how much space is actually available.

I am going to guess it has an electric fuel pump.....

to determine 'space' , use a peach can, coffee can,quart paint can as an 'alternator', just to get a feel for 'will it fit' AND how easy ? it'll be to install. heck, roll of TP might work for you too !.Dimensions for alternators should be on the website.....
