Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is celebrated on June 19th, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. This news arrived two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, highlighting a delayed implementation of freedom for many in the Confederate South.

This is the first time it will fall on trash collection day for us, so trash pickup moves from Thursday to Friday this week.
That explains why almost no one has their cans out tonight.

Been around as a 'celebration' for a long time, but the reason you may not have been aware....is that until 2021 it was not a 'Federal Holiday'.

Texas (my Home State) was little 'late' accepting and implementing the emancipation act.

And even when the General Order was given, it didn't result in much more than changing the 'relationship' (for many)....though also making them free men/women.

Another excuse for the federal employees to get paid for not working.

Holidays have come (some multi-day even) and gone (president's birthdays, Columbus Day, etc). I have feelings toward much of this, but don't believe this is the place to express them.

OK, back to tractors and general tomfoolery:)

I have no issue with the holiday other than the name is embarrassingly pathetic. “Emancipation Day”, “Abolition of Slavery Day”, “Freedom for All Day”… Juneteenth??? That sounds like a name that came from a bunch of creatively challenged people getting together to come up with a name, couldn’t agree on anything, so they went with a generic name that means nothing. They could have at least called it “June 19” so folks would know when it is.

The name didn't become prominent until sometime in the 1890's and was so named by the freed African American people themselves.

Yes, perhaps it could have been something.....ummmm 'better'. But it is what it is.
