Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is celebrated on June 19th, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. This is the first time it will fall on trash collection day for us, so trash pickup moves from Thursday to Friday this week.

Been around as a 'celebration' for a long time, but the reason you may not have been aware....is that until 2021 it was not a 'Federal Holiday'.
Texas (my Home State) was little 'late' accepting and implementing the emancipation act.
And even when the General Order was given, it didn't result in much more than changing the 'relationship' (for many)....though also making them free men/women.
Another excuse for the federal employees to get paid for not working.
Holidays have come (some multi-day even) and gone (president's birthdays, Columbus Day, etc). I have feelings toward much of this, but don't believe this is the place to express them.
